Wait, but you can't run GrapheneOS on any Sony devices? Huh??

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 22 points 17 hours ago

Reported for being awesome.

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 22 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Well ig its time to stop buying anything made by Sony.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 18 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

That time was after the first rootkit.

Oh you sweet summer child. There are many, many more over the years.

Sony is satans droppings

[–] gera@feddit.nu 3 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (2 children)

sad, they're one of the few brands left that still have the audio port

[–] tutter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Minijack? P sure Xiaomi has it in most of their models as well, but tbh dont know the state of that Company, if theyve got sketchy connections, good chance they do probably

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

The others are I think: Motorola (mobility) which is owned by Lenovo

[–] mazzilius_marsti@lemmy.world 19 points 22 hours ago (4 children)

csrrying 2 phones is the way to go imho. One for these stupid apps and the other for your personal data. So its like the work / personal phone setup but instead we have private / non -private phone.

[–] mcz@lemmy.world 6 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

I don't like being fucked in the butt so I carry two dildos: one for fucking me in the butt and one without batteries.

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Lately I've been thinking that this, unfortunately, is the way.

[–] MrShankles@reddthat.com 11 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Dunno why I never considered that. A VPN over wifi on one, for banking and whatever... and then my phone. Hell, I used to carry an MP3 player, flip phone, and a camera if the time called for it. Making me feel like I lost my way lol, appreciate the succinct tip

Edit: smacking my head cause I literally have to carry two phones at work, as is. Why tf have I never considered this as an option for myself, even when I knew it was optional? Damn man, gonna grab me a phone for personal use and put this one to (for) work. Thanks again my friend

[–] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 1 points 13 hours ago

This is likely the route I'll take in the near future.

[–] LandoLuma@lemmy.zip 13 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

For an in-depth technical breakdown and why GrapheneOS cannot bypass Google Play Integrity check even with it's Play Services Sandbox mode, check here: https://thecybersecguru.com/news/yoti-grapheneos-sony-playstation-age-verification/

[–] Fiery@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 hour ago

I can't say why, but that article has a very AI-generated text feeling.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 68 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh, looks like they don't like people owning the stuff Sony makes. I know a way to solve that issue.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Revoke Sony's corporate charter? Ban Sony products from being imported? Criminally charge the CEO and board?

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 7 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

Well all that would be great, but we all know none of that will happen. We can (and should) just stop buying Sony items however as they are not doing so great on that front already. This is the issue when brands do stupid shit, no one seems to want to just stop buying.

[–] diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Ngl we basically can't buy anything anymore

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 2 points 17 hours ago

Hey, silver lining there. We are all broke and Sony is priced out of the market.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

We can (and should) just stop buying Sony items however as they are not doing so great on that front already.

Waaay ahead of ya there, buddy. I've been deliberately boycotting Sony since at least the rootkit in 2005, and I think the newest Sony product I actually bought was a Walkman cassette player.

Trouble is, Sony somehow still went right on existing as a huge multinational corporation for the last 20 years anyway. It's almost as if boycotts aren't enough and we actually need consumer protection law. 🤔

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

My line was when I learned their phones had non standard screen sizes for the reason of "fuck you".

[–] kamen@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

That's strange. Any sources on that? I'd be interested to read up.

Whatever the reasoning, if it wasn't for the other things and if displays were the only criteria, I would actually prefer Sony - a tall and narrow display would work nicely IMO (if you aren't watching 16:9 videos all the time - which I am not), and Sony is also one of the very few manufacturers to offer displays without a punch hole and with very mellow corner rounding. I'm with larger hands and even so I think that my current phone - Nothing 3a Pro - 6.77", 20:9-ish aspect ratio - is just too large to be practical and I'd prefer something around 6" at most (and, as mentioned, something as tall, but narrower could work well).

[–] MrShankles@reddthat.com 2 points 19 hours ago

I'ma have to re-remember a facet of my life where "I'll make do" was a thing. I mean, it still very much so is... but fuck, I could be "making do" even more if I tried just a little. I don't wanna, because comfortability and all that, but I've done more with less in my past. I'm tired, but I guess it is what it is for the time being. Really wish I didn't have to because of greedy evil, but fuck 'em... good luck in your bunker, I'll smile at the sun instead

[–] carpelbridgesyndrome@sh.itjust.works 84 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

After going through the linked threads. Discussing graphene OS or any other ROM on r/privacy will get you banned. WTF‽

[–] freely1333@reddthat.com 33 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Because the person who makes it gets touchy on some things and started drama with someone or doxxed them or whatever type deal. It’s not like you can’t talk about it you just can’t use the word because he was going through and being weird about conversations about it. It’s nothing against him or them it’s just one of those developers being a unique type of person - which makes sense in the hyper privacy space.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 3 points 17 hours ago

So you'd ban the user for being a weirdo, not the discussion

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

He's certainly "unique".

I feel like he only gets away with it because people find the Dev of a privacy OS being incredibly paranoid somewhat reassuring...

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 day ago (4 children)

He gets away with it because he makes a high quality OS that people want to use. I don't see it as much worse than e.g. using Linux when Torvalds is kind of an asshole.

Pretty sure that is it. A lotta people in response to seeing him decry certain technologies tend to say, "that uncompromising nature on privacy is why GrapheneOS holds up so well." Which I gotta be real when I say that it really does make me feel more comfortable with GrapheneOS' development. I can't keep up with all news on it, I'm not wanting to completely audit all the source code, but having a development team led by someone like that does bring a sense of ease toward my phone.

[–] KingKong33@lemmy.ml 152 points 2 days ago (3 children)

All these scumbag companies are making it easier and easier for me to avoid their products.

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

But they are making it harder to have products too.

[–] kablez@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

You just have to get creative and shop around. I've had a full journey since the beginning of Android starting with HTC. Used Sony, Samsung, Razer... all went to shit one way or another.

Nowadays very happy with Redmi and Oneplus. I got a Redmi watch and it's battery lasts nearly a month!

[–] Slashme@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

I loved Redmi last time I bought one, but now they've basically made it impossible to root or mod their devices. So I bought a used Pixel and donated my newish Redmi to my GF.

Wow, thanks Sony. Still being cunts about copyright I see; nothing has changed since the SecuROM/XCP days...

fuuuuuk, I used to like SONY phones

[–] nuko147@lemmy.world 62 points 2 days ago (2 children)

So you need to do a face ID to play games in PlayStation in some countries now??? WTF

[–] DanceMomsSavedMe@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

Coming to a country near you!

Sad stuff.

[–] melfie@lemmy.zip 4 points 23 hours ago

I can’t decide who’s the shittiest between Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. Guess I’ll just stick to PC games and emulators.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 37 points 1 day ago

Let's end this bullshit once and for all, and go FOSS.
