"Yeah buddy, I dunno where to start. You're gonna need a new alternator, flush the carbies, and those tires? Phew I'm surprised you even rolled in on those things. Gonna be a week, week and a half at least. Probably run you upwards of 3 grand. Before tax."

What's the really long spindly thing on top of the crew capsule for?

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's the Launch Escape System (LES). It's a rocket motor that can activate to separate the crew capsule from the rest of the rocket in the event of a bad launch.

Ahh, gotcha. I assume it separates before the final stage booster ignites?

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I believe (though I'm not an expert on the system) that it separates during the second stage when it's no longer needed.

[–] CommissarVulpin@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Yes, it gets jettisoned after the separation of the first stage and ignition of the second stage.

Where's the red circle when you need it?

That tower is borg technology.

That seems like a long ways up to ride on a roller-coaster, but okay.
