I'm more interested in the Frames, I always wanted to try and get into VR but it was always either too expensive or too Facebook.

Glad they learned from the controller debacle and implemented a reservation system up front this time.

Price is higher than I was hoping for, but it makes sense with memory and storage costs being what they are.

The lottery idea is also genius. That's how all scarce goods should be sold, like concert tickets.

Feels underwhelming, especially since it's 2TB what you'll want to go with. However with handheld consoles signaling the new prices... I think the price of SM is the new reality of a budget gaming setup. Part of me feels, we're seeing murder of gaming and PC tinkering/DIY in broad daylight.

I'll probably get one because I want a living room PC for couch gaming, and mainly want the official hardware support from Valve.

Also the few seconds timing from pressing a button on steam controller to my game being ready sounds super nice. Lower friction is nicer for the nontechnical family members to do couch games too.

Less powerful than an actual PS5 at that price... no thanks. Valve was apparently going to sell this starting at $750.... thanks AI!

Wanted to replace Xbox SX with this, but at this price performance to value ratio is tough to swallow.

Comparing a console to a computer feels weird to me. They're simply not the same things.

You also have to factor in the price of the games and the width of the catalog.

So - just curious - where do people speculate the frames price point at after seeing this? I’ve been eyeing that more as my first entry into VR.

~~Certainly wouldn't get this for VR. It's not that much better than a standalone headset. Both can run light games, neither can run heavy games~~

The Frame should use a cheaper Qualcomm chip which is slightly more affordable but it also doesn't have color passtrough camera's It's also focused more towards the crowd which already has a high-end PC as a wireless headset for it. It it's below $800 it could be decent value but it's not very groundbreaking.

The frame is a standalone headset

I thought they meant this steam box as a PC for the Frame. My bad.

That’s not that bad considering what it is.

[–] viertesauge@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I was still hoping it would be half that. Valve seems to finally have figured out how to do a proper steam machine but ram prices just fucked them over.

[–] jlow@slrpnk.net 10 points 2 days ago

I mean "hoping" sure, but we all knew it wouldn't be. Fuck AI, fuck billionaires, fuck capitalism.

[–] justinthegeek@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

They did say since day one that it wouldn’t be console prices. That being said 750-800 would be awesome.

[–] gila@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

What a shame this will certainly flop, not that the price is unexpected in these times but given the first steam machine you hate to see it go down the same way
