You will see us be more intentional about how and where Copilot integrates across Windows, focusing on experiences that are genuinely useful and well-crafted. As part of this, we are reducing unnecessary Copilot entry points, starting with apps like Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad.”

Proceeds to increase unnecessary copilot entry points

What Windows? There's no Desktop in the future. There's just a Signup.... LOL, the fuck I'm gonna be signing up to any MicroSloppy shit.

Didn’t microslop have an antitrust lawsuit for something similar? Something something Internet Expolorer windows 98?

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 11 points 5 hours ago

The PC Master Race has become mostly Windows users who literally have no control over their own computer except in the tiny little play areas that their actual master race overlords allow them to play in.

Fuck I'm glad for making the jump to 100% Linux. This is straight bullshit.

[–] wildtamaskan@pawb.social 8 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Same, switched to Linux as my main desktop OS a couple months ago. W11 is currently rotting on my secondary drive. At some point I'll get rid of it altogether

I can tell you that if you're the least bit tech savvy, you can go ahead and wipe the drive. Honeslty, having used Linux since 2000, it has come a LOOOONG way. Playing games on a Linux PC was a god damn challenge back then. Now, with driver support and with all the different launchers and Proton, it's become dead easy. I can't even tell the difference between my KDE desktop and Windows 10 in terms of what I can do and the desktop experience in general. Heck I even installed a tiled launcher menu to make it more Win-10 like. I love it!

[–] _lilith@lemmy.world 9 points 7 hours ago

I love it when they add Fucking AI to background processes on my work box. They put it in the damn spell check last time, tell me that's not logging all your input -_-

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 18 points 8 hours ago

LOL, the debloating lasted what... less than a week? They are way beyond any chance of redemption

[–] c64z86@lemmy.world 13 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

I become even more glad and grateful of Linux with each passing day!

[–] forgetful_fox@lemmy.world 49 points 11 hours ago (5 children)

I feel sorry for anyone stuck on a Windows system for work. Pouring one out for your system resources.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 hours ago

i had to use a w11 laptop today, it was so horrendous to navigate.

[–] SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

This is me. I got a new work laptop last November with a good spec and loads of ram, because I'm a "power user" ... and it absolutely drags on every little thing.

Windows Explorer falls over sometimes. Click on the start menu and wait for it to catch up. Lots if waiting for updates to complete. Don't get me started on actually running MS programs on it.

And this is the Enterprise version with the worst shit already switched off.

Meanwhile, at home I have a 12 year old Thinkpad that was decidedly mid-spec when new, with completely stock Linux Mint, which flies along (the only change from stock being an SSD, and lots of stickers). I don't even need to switch to a lighter window manager :-)

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I'm an engineer and all my coworkers got laptop "upgrades" at work. They've all had similar experiences. Rverything is just slower on them.

For some reason I wasn't included in the same round of upgrades, and I'm happy for it.

[–] SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 hours ago

Indeed. I really didn't like Windows 10, but this is ridiculous :-(

[–] herrvogel@lemmy.world 22 points 9 hours ago

Last week I almost missed my train because of windows update.

Every day my hatred for Windows, well Microsoft as a whole really, grows. Every time I launch the almost incomprehensibly bad piece of shit that is Outlook, every time I have to restart explorer.exe because of some dumb bug that I remember from Windows 7, every time I try to mount a network share that has the same hostname as an already mounted one, every time the start bar launches Edge (not my default browser) to look something up on Bing (not my default search engine) despite my having turned that feature off, every time I have to dive into some settings to disable yet another copilot button, my desire to break into Satya Nutella's home when he's on vacation and spill old milk all over his furniture increases by a noticeable degree.

[–] GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Due to work security policies, using remote VMs, I'm technically using like 3 windows systems at the same time for work every day 💀

I bump the stupid copilot key far too often, but since it's not installed it just brings up a window going "uh.... you need to update copilot or something idk"

[–] YurkshireLad@lemmy.ca 11 points 10 hours ago

I appreciate that, thanks.

That's what the average Gentoo user looks like after staying inside for two months installing, setting up and troubleshooting their system. Had it once, maybe a bit over 20 years ago. I respect those who love it, but it wasn't for me.

[–] msage@programming.dev 1 points 1 hour ago

It's way way better nowadays.

Took me a bit of fiddling to actually boot, but afterwards it just works. Rock solid, I recommend it to anyone with more than 5 core CPUs.

[–] yaroto98@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

After the AUR debacle, I'm considering it.

[–] msage@programming.dev 1 points 1 hour ago

Try it, you start by installing it from chroot, so there's nothing to lose.

It's very good, though I don't use a full DE, so my compile times may not be representative.

[–] urushitan@kakera.kintsugi.moe 17 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Compile your malware from source, like a real engineer!

[–] yaroto98@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

I think I escaped it because I use Garuda. They have their own copy called Chaotic-Aur where they prebuild and scan stuff. Between that layer, and me being slow to update, according to the scan, I avoided it. The packages that were infected that I had installed were older copies from before the infection.

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Just don't download anything stupid from AUR. Verify your getting the correct, supported packages, and you should be fine.

[–] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 hours ago

I've always been tempted

[–] Bluegrass_Addict@lemmy.ca 16 points 11 hours ago

microshit is also forcing yet another price increase for all 365 garbage on July 1st too... reason, ai dogshit. they are losing money so they gotta jack everyone's monthly/yearly costs. glad I will never pay for this shit lol

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 12 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

Anyone have a link to a guide on how to remove Copilot as much as you can? It keeps showing up on my computer at work and I'm so sick of it.

[–] CtrlAltDyeet@anarchist.nexus 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I highly recommend Chris Titus' winutil. It has an option to strip out all AI in the tweaks, among other fantastic options.

As per the github, you can either download the powershell utility or pull it directly from his website: irm https://christitus.com/win | iex

Edit: in hindsite this reads like a malware ad :/ here is the link to the github https://github.com/christitustech/winutil

Installing Mint did the trick for me!

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

These "install linux' solutions started but the more time passes the more viable they are.

(since the Linux distros improved even more and Microsoft did a lot to worsen windows)

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (2 children)

I would but it's a work computer and it's out of my hands. I've already tried running mint on one of them and about 70% of the software we use doesn't even remotely work.

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

You can also try using flyoobe.

It's just a script that runs scripts to remove annoyances from windows, and a lot of the things it does can be done without local admin

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 1 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

*don't put Mint on your work issued machine (unless they said its cool)

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Someone I worked with did that and got away with it somehow. He would get an occasional nag but mostly they just let him do it. Wish I had those cajones.

[–] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

Good advice.

I actually did put Mint on my work computer - but I have a great deal of leverage (hard to replace), and my boss likes me, and the Windows 10 to 11 uograde had failed several times, and all we we being measured on was getting off of Windows 10.

I've been running Mint for work since just before the Windows 10 end of life last year, and it has been lovely.

Ask me anything, of course.

But obviously, most folks should never do this without some kind of blessing from their employer.

[–] foiledAgain@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

Depends on when. There are config scripts to use during installation that let you pick what you want. After installation use Windows Shutup by O&O software. I can’t vouch for it being 100% effective but it appears to do the job.

I just had an aneurism reading that😂😂😂, and líquid glass works perfectly fine. So far I really like the change.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

It truly is an awful series of UI changes they made. The huge rounded corners look terrible on top of this issue^

[–] spartanatreyu@programming.dev 1 points 2 hours ago

Don't forget the terrible implementation of glassy ui: https://mastodon.social/@lensco@mastodon.world/115184867033621399

Solution: give everyone the option, via command-line, to enable enterprise data protection.

I opened Copilot at work, saw a green shield, and clicked on it. Enterprise data protection may solve some issues some of you have with Copilot. Not all. For one, it won't use what you ask to train it. It encrypts the data. It does tell you IT can log your queries. It also mentions it censors results. I don't like Copilot, but sometimes, it can be useful, in the way that sometimes, Word can do something Pages doesn't do well. The rift is wider between Excel and Numbers, but I'm an Excel guy. I won't make the obvious pun. I really do like Word and Excel, but when the price literally doubled and there was nothing I could do (apparently some people were offered a classic version — not me), I just canceled. I was fine paying them $50 or $60 a year for Microsoft 365, even after switching to a Mac, even though Mac never got Publisher (which I also enjoy using). I wasn't good with $100 a year. So now I just use iWork for free, and I have the benefit of saying my computer does not run any Microsoft software. Or Google, for that matter, though I do use some of their web services.

In an ideal world, macOS or Linux would be the dominant OS. In an ideal world, Amiga woulda never stopped being a thing. (I know it's still a thing, but really... no it's not.) It would be Macs and Amigas for regular users and Linux for server admins and uber nerds. (Not that you have to be an uber nerd or even a nerd to use Linux in our world.) That Windows has such a stranglehold is all the more reason to get the hell away from it. Especially with Proton on Linux making gaming more accessible than ever before.

[–] Bluegrass_Addict@lemmy.ca 5 points 11 hours ago

it's been dogshit, wrong and slow as fuck everytime I've attempted to use it for work. I refuse to use it. I'm quicker then that pile of trash.

AI can get fucked
