Yes, walkers, it's your job to not get in the way of speeding cars.

Replace flags with bricks.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 3 points 2 weeks ago

Take a bottle of water. Drink 1/4 of it. Leave the cap off. Freeze it. Put the cap back on. Carry it with you when you walk.

You know. To stay cool. Or maybe drink. Definitely don't throw the bottle of frozen water at any cars that attempt to kill you.

"We didn't want to (or couldn't afford to) install proper crossing indicators so grab one of these dollar-store flags and hope for the best. Injury or loss of your life is entirely the responsibility of the pedestrian."

Yes, exactly.

As the kids used to say:

Carry a brick instead!

[–] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 weeks ago

Replace it with retroreflective bricks for added effectiveness!

I mean, it sort of is. It sucks, but having the legal right of way doesn't guarantee that you will walk away uninjured. Pedestrians absolutely need to stay alert and protect themselves from horrible drivers and the death machines that they are barely in control of.

+1

The world should be a better place, but it doesn't help us if we plug our ears and act the way we would if it was already that better place.

Yes it sucks to have to wait to someone aware that will just respect legal right, and then it is expected to wave a hand to say thanks to the driver. Thanks for letting me in life, thanks for respecting the law.

Does drivers wave a "thanks" to others when crossing a green light? No.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

I never wave to drivers. One time, I was crossing a street, and another pedestrian waved to a driver, causing the driver to enter the intersection and almost hit me. I have heard that in some places, pedestrians waving to drivers can be interpreted as directing traffic, and so they could be partially liable for any accidents that happen.

Looks like America. How about instead you attach day-glo orange blunderbusses so you can shoot drivers who attempt to murder you with their cars. Deadly weapon to defend against deadly weapon seems fair.

[–] Geobloke@aussie.zone 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Where are you even walking? Why is there no footpath?

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As someone who loves driving, I want much better pedestrian infrastructure everywhere, but especially in the US.

The better the pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, the safer both driving and walking gets.

I am a Swede, I live in a municipality with one of the lowest tax rates here, but I would gladly increase it, a year or two ago there was national news that families had to move from this municipality as their kids was not given the legally mandated assistance in school. As someone who needed and got special help in school when I grew up, and now is a well functioning adult who contributes to society, I want the students of today to have the same or better help than I got, and frankly it is fucking embarrassing that the local school can't provide the legally mandated assistance.

I feel the same way here, this is fucking embarrassing, any sane mayor would be ashamed of themselves when seeing this in their jurisdiction, as should anyone living in the area while demanding lower taxes.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 5 points 2 weeks ago

as should anyone living in the area while demanding lower taxes.

If conservatives had shame about reasonable things, a lot of problems would go away.

Carrying a flag is a stupid way to pass the buck. The Italian thing to do is wave your arms around and begin shouting ''MAMMA MIA I AM GOING TO A CROSS THE ROAD!!''

[–] craftrabbit@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

MAMMA MIA IMMA GONNA TU CROSSA DA ROOOOOD!

[–] Seppo@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 weeks ago

I also hate seeing the Danish flag

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Having to wave a red flag around while you are crossing a street is a red flag.

[–] arcine@jlai.lu 2 points 2 weeks ago

That looks like only TWO LANES !?

[–] hhg@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean, this is obviously fake.

…right?

[–] perishthethought@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean, I have definitely heard of this kind if thing before, like before AI. But if you're saying you see evidence of fakery, please point it out.

[–] hhg@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 weeks ago

Oh, I just meant that the whole thing seems so unfathomably absurd
