Just for fun, to see what the opinion of the Lemmy crowd is.

Edit: VPNs unblocked now. There was a setting I overlooked, my bad. I did not block VPNs intentionally. Sorry. Please vote now if you can (and want to).

Can't vote because I use a VPN but no, I try to avoid paying union busters

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

Oh, that's bad. I didn't know they would block VPNs. There was an option to detect unique users, and I chose by IP (but with option Anonymize voter data). For anyone else, I guess the comment section is the only way to express opinion then. Edit: Why the downvote?

I found out there is a setting to unblock VPN users. Please try again, I hope this works now. It was not my intention to block!

[–] Klear@piefed.world 42 points 1 week ago (2 children)

None of the choices apply to me. I'm pretty excited to play it. Not gonna pay for it though.

I can't give my money to a union busting company. I'll play it though. Probably "borrowed" from "a friend"

[–] gilokee@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

lots of friends on the internet lending out their stuff! :D

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 8 points 1 week ago

I have friends everywhere

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

They helped me out a lot. I'm thankful to have such friends too, could play Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. BFF

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 32 points 1 week ago

No. Rockstar is dead to me.

[–] arcine@jlai.lu 20 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Voted "Not Interested" while guessing it was the least common option, turns out it's close to 60% ! I guess this audience is a little biased towards playing indies, maybe that's why.

I don't think I'm going to get GTA 6 at all. I have a grudge against Take2 since they had Gearbox update all the old Borderlands games right before Borderlands 4 came out to include an anticheat software and the EULA now states that any info the anticheat scrapes can be sold to their marketing partners. So they turned all of those games into spyware. Rockstar and Take2 both stated that the already over-monitized GTA Online is actually under-monitized, so I fully expect the GTA 6 online to be more of a fucking nightmare than EA's Battlefront 2 on release. And I also hate how as soon as Rockstar saw how profitable GTAO was, they cancelled the single player DLC and shoehorned all that shit into GTAO.

I'm tired, boss. It'll be a cold day in hell before I spend money on a triple-A game again

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

they cancelled the single player DLC and shoehorned all that shit into GTAO

I didn't know that, but always suspected it.

Yeah, they never outright stated it, but this was all found in one of the big data leaks from Rockstar. The first was mostly finished and involved Trevor working with the CIA, doing a heist on the casino, and going on James Bond/Austin Powers like adventures. The second DLC was a zombie survival scenario (probably going to be like RDR's Undead Nightmare) with Micheal and his family. And the final DLC basically just had concept art of Franklin being sucked up into a UFO.

All the cars and the casino heist from Trevor's DLC is in GTAO. The cars modified with sheet metal and spikes from Michael's DLC got repurposed into a Mad Max type of update for GTAO.

Why is "buy eventually" not an option? I'm not arranging my life around the PC launch, but I don't need a sale either.

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Agreed. I realized later after reading the comments, that important options such as "maybe later" or something like that is missing.

No, but also I was never going to buy GTA6.

I loved GTA3, Vice City & San Andreas. Played for hundreds of hours. I played GTA4 for a few hours but it never really clicked the same. I also played Saints Row 2 and Saints Row 3, which I really enjoyed and scratched that same itch (those games eventually went a little over the top, but I still had fun.)

When GTA5 came out all I ever heard about it was it being "online" which turned me off of the series completely. I think I later understood that there is a single player component and an online component, but by then I didn't really care.

If anything I'm likely to try revisiting GTA4 this year. Maybe.

[–] Klear@piefed.world 6 points 1 week ago

GTA 4 went for a lot more realistic vibe, it's very gray and a lot less arcadey. GTA 5 is a lot more colourful, both in visuals and gameplay. They even brought back fill frenzies/rampages, in an interesting story-friendly way (most of them are a character's psychotic breaks, some are a drug trip).

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (6 children)

When GTA5 came out all I ever heard about it was it being “online” which turned me off of the series completely.

Well the game launched without an online component. So at launch, it shouldn't be talked about it being an online game. I purchased it way back on launch for Xbox 360, and that much later on PC for sale. Never played the online part, not interested in that. The single player campaign is pretty fun though, especially the character Trevor. No spoilers (in case you don't know much about details).

BTW I never finished GTA 4 (on PC). I like the driving much better in 4 over 5. Driving in 5 is more simple and approachable, but I don't like that.

No, but I get the sense this is a skewed audience. I would not be surprised at all if this is one of very few corners of the internet not 98% invested in it.

[–] Nelots@piefed.zip 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm not at all surprised to see the "not interested" and "wait for a sale" options being massively ahead on Lemmy. Though it'd be interesting to see how different the "not interested" crowd would be if the option were split into "not interested at all" and "interested but wont buy for political/moral reasons".

The comments here imply most would vote for the second option, but I'm in the first camp myself. I've never been interested in any of the GTA games.

Will pirate in 5 years with dlc and if like then buy 70% off.

[–] Nibodhika@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Voted not interested, but your question actually has another option: "it will not be launched on my platform", I don't think it will have a Linux version, nor even if they will support Proton.

Probably, but my platform is PC and I'm not expecting it for years.

I fully expect Rockstar to release it for the PS6 first and then we can start an 18 month timer for the PC release.

[–] fishy@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago

Yup, they haven't even announced a release date. But I'm sure they'll do typical Rockstar shit and charge the full $80 when they release it two years after console.

There's thoughts it'll come to PC sooner than five did because Rockstar postponed PC port of five to work on the next Gen console release, but I honestly don't even care. There's like 20 games in my backlog and other great games will release before then. The large lapse in time between titles has me feeling totally fine never playing 6.

[–] BaraCoded@literature.cafe 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Nah. Never been interested in the IP, and I've come to hate open-world games. They're always the same sh*t with the same repetitive tasks. How can a game be a game when most of its gameplay is litteraly a list of chores in-between driving sequences longer than a loading screen?

lol, I know what people vote for in these kind of poll VS what they actually do on launch day.

I am not convinced.

I'd have been a day one customer if they'd bothered making a PC version and hadn't arbitrarily blocked Linux users from GTA Online a couple of years ago. Now they can get fucked.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Still haven’t played gta5 story or rdr2

  • I'm playing on PC (Linux PC + a Steam Deck) because it's a more open platform.
    • I avoid buying games that first came out as exclusives: if they didn't want my money when the game first came out, I'm not going to give it to them later either 🤷
  • I generally prefer buying from smaller companies and indie studios
    • There are millions of other games from developers who do want my money, are cheaper, the money goes to developers and artists who need it instead of a huge corporation that lay off people all the time etc
    • Games are a form of art, and there are so many developers and artists that take the leap to try new things instead of pouring the same type of content in the same safe thing that appeals to more people and just sell more copies
    • Smaller games usually have way better VfM (I tend to prefer ~€0.5-€1 per hour of gameplay, but if it's a small studio I'm okay with paying a little bit more, given that steam+taxes take a little over 50% 🫠)

I chose "wait until sale" because there will apparently be no actual physical release, but I'd consider getting the $80 version at some point if there was one. I was fully prepared to just buy it on release, but $80 digital-only left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't appreciate Rockstar's blatant greed and it immediately dropped it from "must-buy" to "buy later at some point, maybe."

Now, if they made a Bully 2? I'd pay $100 for that.

[–] y0kai@anarchist.nexus 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

lol not unless they make a PC version in 10 years.

hopefully this one is a flop and rock star goes out of business.

No. I find virtually all AAA games for the past decade or so to be unsatisfying. I only pay for indie games nowadays.

I hardly buy anything on release, only the occassional indie.

In other words: No chance.

[–] shrewbacca@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

No. Everything I’ve seen so far has been as underwhelming as 5.

I’m good.

[–] gilokee@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I'll probably just...acquire it...

[–] zecg@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Possibly, in like five years when it's 15€ or less on pc

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I am one of the few in this world that GTA just didn't appeal to, and I guess I'm lucky in that regard, seeing as how it takes so long to develop a new one.

For $20, I'm in ..

[–] kboos1@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Maybe when it goes on sale

[–] TAG@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The poll does not break down if people are not buying it because they object to some aspect of the release or they are not buying it because the game does not appeal to them. It makes it sound like there is a large boycott of the game when it could just be GTA indifferents (like me) stuffing the ballot box.
