A new state law limits Florida communities’ aims to offset greenhouse gas emissions that are warming the global climate and intensifying disasters such as hurricanes.

Specifically, HB 1217 prohibits local governments from pursuing net-zero emissions goals. At least 10 cities and counties have implemented such policies, including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, and Leon County, where Tallahassee, the state capital, is located. But the new law will not necessarily upend these policies, said Bradley Marshall, senior attorney at Earthjustice, an advocacy group.

“It’s certainly meant to scare municipalities and local governments from trying to do things to further net-zero policies,” he said. “Now, its exact impact and what it exactly prohibits is probably up for some debate. Things that are adjacent to it—emissions reductions and even climate change reduction policies—on their face will not run afoul at all of a ban on adopting a net zero policy.”

Small 'brained' government

[–] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 12 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

No no, see it can be big as long as it works for the corporations, or, uh, we mean the people. It can be big as long as it works for the people. Wait no, that's not right either.

when they ask for small government, they do not mean lowering the scope of the government functions, but having less people who have more concentrated powers, and removing checks and balances.

Small oppressive sensitive grifting fascist wasteful and willfully ignorant government.

I have no idea why their property is worth anything. Well I do, ignorant boomers. That market will someday crash though, as the sea retakes everything and the majority of younger folks have no interest in moving there.

Let's go 'net-negative' policies

[–] cadekat@pawb.social 5 points 32 minutes ago

I didn't think they'd be that dumb and leave a loophole for net-negative policies, but holy shit:

"Net zero policy" means any policy, program, or initiative designed to achieve a balance between total amount of greenhouse gas emitted into the atmosphere with an equal amount removed from the atmosphere.

It literally is net-zero. Removing more CO2 than you emit is absolutely allowed.

“We’re gonna need you to burn at least 500lbs of tires for every tree planted.”

So... A "small" government is acting like a big brother...

I look forward to scuba diving in the neo-Atlantis amusement park that was the former state of Florida.

Not even sure if this is legally enforceable past being a guideline.

MAGA hates Meatball

I'd like DeSantis to study this whole situation more. Perhaps putting him in the path of a hurricane would give him a more informed perspective.

So they can still target .00001 emissions, or net negative emissions. I suppose it's fitting to get a nothing burger on nottheonion.

Not really.

"The bill also prohibits governmental entities from implementing, administering, or enforcing any program or joining any organization that has a policy of establishing limits on greenhouse gas emissions or requiring or incentivizing participation in an emissions trading program."

There's definitely language in the bill to cut off that loophole
