Google probably knows my cat's last name and date of birth. And its probably sending data to "them" about my cat.

I hate these stupid clickbait titles aimed at making the company out to be the bad guy, when the truth is that the government “requested” (read: ordered) them to hand over the data.

You can have notifications that doesn't use proprietary servers. At least on Google side. https://unifiedpush.org/
