Is there a word for when the media is constantly like 3+ years behind with "warnings" like this? I mean Jesus Christ, turning into?

[–] xodoh74984@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)
[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 28 minutes ago

True... Though things have accelerated at an alarming pace over the past few years

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 2 points 53 minutes ago

I'm sure German could do a compound of "spät erkennen" or similar for a late realisation.

[–] propitiouspanda@lemmy.cafe 1 points 2 hours ago

There's a pokemon for it.

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 38 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

"turning"? 🤣🤣

You Yankees really do live in a bubble.

[–] Xanthobilly@lemmy.world -5 points 2 hours ago (3 children)

You know, it’s funny, the only time I read someone referring to Americans as Yankees is when it’s a post-Soviet bloc troll. Such a red flag to me.

[–] SinAdjetivos@lemmy.world 7 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

[David Attenborough voice] Here we see the Yankee attempt to protect their bubble by claiming that anything which contradicts their perceived reality is the result of some dangerous foreigner.

However, while the Yankee does their best to isolate themselves from the perceived dangers outside, they are completely unaware that this paranoia is just one of the symptoms of the parasite that has begun to lodge itself deep within their brain. Without immediate assistance the Yankee will likely develop increasingly fascist tendencies before perishing in a rather gruesome manner as the Yankee colony self destructs.

That kind of irrational logic will no doubt serve you well. Enjoy your future!

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 1 hour ago

Definitely not a "all criticism of the US is literal soviet propaganda" coping mechanism

[–] serenissi@lemmy.world 8 points 3 hours ago

wait US is putting surveillance on techno producers?

[–] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 34 points 5 hours ago

it's already a surveillance state and both the red and blue party are complicit.

Here's a 20 year old album about it (it's really cool that my favorite band is called ISIS. It's neat how they broke up in 2010 but I still can only wear the merch at home)

[–] teamevil@lemmy.world 2 points 49 minutes ago

Panopticon is fucking brilliant...hands down my Favorite ISIS album.

[–] FinishingDutch@lemmy.world 42 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Uh, do the kids these days really not know about the post-9/11 Patriot Act?

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 15 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Well Obama 'fixed' it.
Made it even more draconian but called it the Freedom Act.
Shit like that works every time.

[–] FinishingDutch@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

God I miss the pre-9/11 US, when the worst thing happening was bad jokes on SNL about Bill Clinton and cigars.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

Maybe not the best example.
At that time this sleezebag (and others with power) got away with a lot of sexual misconduct.
And in his case probably rapes.
Minimising it as him being some naughthy schoolboy and making jokes about is not really something I miss.

[–] nullPointer@programming.dev 39 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

kinda been that way since 2001

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Since a bit earlier or so I've read.

[–] JoeKrogan@lemmy.world 20 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Where are all the "nothing to hide" people now.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 2 points 4 hours ago

Probably realizing that Democrats can now trace who bought MAGA hats and they too have guns.

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 66 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Every part of the world is. It's not unique to the US. Laws need to be passed to stop this.

[–] kyub@discuss.tchncs.de 44 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (2 children)

Yes. Unfortunately, these systems are also a great gift for any upcoming fascist regime (like the Trump junta currently) which will not only happily continue using the existing infrastructure but also extend it like mad.

Maybe humanity's greatest weaknesses overall: the lack of foresight and the lack of wisdom learned from historic precedents (e.g. Nazi Germany? Forgotten by now). Everything's always about short-term goals, ignoring any long-term disadvantages. See also: climate disaster.

[–] Plebcouncilman@sh.itjust.works 34 points 9 hours ago

Bet you $500 that the next democrat president won’t tear down the system and will in fact give even more contracts to Palantir & co.

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

That's a capitalism weakness, not a human weakness though.

[–] j4yt33@feddit.org -2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)
[–] seekpie@lemmy.seekpie.nohost.me 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)
[–] j4yt33@feddit.org 1 points 1 hour ago

No but the comment above makes it sound like capitalism is some external, alien evil that has nothing to do with humans, even though it's just greed

[–] ogmios@sh.itjust.works 6 points 8 hours ago

Laws aren't enough for something of this magnitude. The general population needs to grow to match the much greater challenges presented by modern technology, or we're going to descend into another dark age until we do learn how to behave.

[–] FreedomAdvocate 18 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

"Turning into" lol. The USA and all their partner countries like the ones in the 5 Eyes program have all been mass techno-surveillance states for decades.

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 10 points 6 hours ago (3 children)

The 5 eyes countries are not allowed to spy on their own citizens, but they can freely share data.

Isn't there an obvious loophole here.

[–] FreedomAdvocate 1 points 14 minutes ago

It’s almost like it was by design.

They also just spy on their own citizens anyway, because who is going to stop them?

[–] propitiouspanda@lemmy.cafe 3 points 2 hours ago

The 5 eyes countries are not allowed to spy on their own citizens

I mean, they do it anyways.

[–] elvith@feddit.org 7 points 5 hours ago

Shhhh... Don't make it even more obvious. The fig leaf covering it is already so flaccid, that it might instantaneously turn into dust at the slightest disturbance.

[–] peereboominc@lemm.ee 5 points 9 hours ago

How hard did Musk press his fingers on his other hand? Or does his blood not flow that hard?
