We have this Dutch tradition called Sinterklaas which is basically our version of Santa Claus. Traditionally he is accompanied by Black Pete, a black person who is usually played by a white person in blackface. He looks like this:
Needless to say that a white man controlling a group of black people who resemble slaves is controversial. In the last 10 years protests against black pete have really increased and as a result the vast majority of the country has banned Black Pete. They are now subsituted by Soot Face Pete as one of the origins of Black Pete is that he climbs through the chimney, hence the black face. Why the bright right lips, gold earrings and total black face were a part of it, is never answered of course.
Childrens party saved, right? No. A handful of racists keeps haning on to Black Pete and some towns in The Netherlands (and Belgium) keep Black Pete during the parade of Sinterklaas. Action groups keep protesting Black Pete at parades and in recent years these protests have turned violent with mobs of racists attacking the protesters.
This was the case yesterday in Yerseke, The Netherlands where protesters were intimidated, attacked, targeted with eggs and whatnot. Police did very little to stop the 'concerned' mob of racists.
Bonus thing: some of the racist mob threw the sieg heil hand gesture but, in contrast with events in Amsterdam, no politican yet has cried antisemitism.
Echo chamber? Maybe. Toxic? No, not at all. It's actually very freeing to be able to discuss ML stuff more deeply instead of having the umpteenth lib/ultra/trot coming in trying to debate TANKIE MAN SQUARE ONE BILLION DEATH.

Today we celebrate Keti Koti in The Netherlands. It is the end of Dutch slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles.

Unfortunately, it is not yet an official holiday. But there is increasing support for it. Nonetheless, it is celebrated by black people all around the country and Suriname and the Antilles.
I wonder how this will end. Western economies are starting to get absolutely wrecked as well with never ending inflation it seems. There are a few Ukranian refugees employed at my place and they don't seem to be much optimistic about returning to a stable country. But they also don't want to stay that long over here.
On a side note, they get treated disgustingly as expected. The people at my place of work are of course working and earning their own income, but they get constant calls from social security departments from the city who are saying they shouldn't work and instead just should collect welfare. The reason for this is that said departments get money for every refugee they provide welfare to. Welfare is a bit lower than what they earn right now (around 2-300 euro per month lower) but they wouldn't have to work. Our company wants them to stay employed and they feel no rush in leaving the company. It's a place where they can integrate into society, but the government would rather have them sitting at home in their own segregated part of town.

Could be because it is an important meeting and he needs to be there. Whatever was happening could wait, in his eyes. But after some talking he decides to leave.
He briefly says something to Xi, Xi smiles, the guy taps the guy on the right of Xi on his shoulder and leaves.
That's it. Of course it is a five cours meal for the Western media. But really, it's not that spectacular.
The reporting is so funny on this. Man's leaving a room, but at what cost???
