Hey all,
I'm upgrading to 2 gb fiber internet, and I'm looking to swap my router for an opnsense build. I'm looking to build a matx PC using the Intel x540 t2. I know the 2x10gbe connections need more processing power compared to the recommended specs on opnsenses site.
But I have no idea what cpu to get.
I'm looking at the i5-6500T since it's low power and I already have a compatible mobo laying around. Is that too old for this application?
Full stack would be the fiber ONT 10gb port - > this opnsense build - > 8 port 2.5 gb switch with a 10gb uplink port.
Will probably have less than 20 devices connected at once, with only a couple of them capable of using the full internet speed.
Any other advice is more than welcome as this is my first dive into networking.
That would definitely work. It's overkill but with the current PC market it might be hard to find something cheaper. I paid $140 for mine about a year ago
