There's a difference though, Mexico has had a huge influx of US remote workers who basically hang out as tourists and literally are gentrifying Mexico City and raising the cost of living because locals can't compete with the wages the US citizens get in US dollars, which are (currently) more valuable than the Mexican Peso. This absolutely raises the cost of living as the city begins to cater more and more to US remote workers and less and less to the actual citizens of Mexico City.

Here's an article on it from as far back as 2023: https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/mexico-city-gentification-americans-rent-prices/3231544/

And why does a post on lemmy.world have have a blahaj URL when I look at it? Is my server making a copy?

Yes, it is, and you're looking at a local version of it. For Blahaj especially this matter as blahaj doesn't federate downvotes, so you never see downvotes on the blahaj version of a post.

Possibly unpopular opinion but fuck them tourists.

I feel bad for the trashed businesses, as they tend to be at least locally owned.

We can indeed hope for a multilateral system, but both Russia and China are in positions to potentially exploit the power vacuum. I actually have more faith in China being the more reasonable and safe choice between the two, but they have just as many questionable things their government does as the US does, sadly.

The sad truth is that when there is a power vacuum, other positions of power end up vying for control of the now empty position of power.

As an American... Knowing our own history... Our government's predilection to installing "friendly" dictators in foreign countries to get what's best for the USA and fuck what's best for that country's citizens...

This isn't the worst thing that could happen to the world, the real problem is the power vacuum being replaced by an even more unsavory country pulling international strings. We can only hope Europe comes out on top here.

Exactly, I doubt the person or persons who developed ICEBlock are getting tons of income from the project compared how much it costs to host and run the project, but the project is immediately creating a positive impact in society.

A lot easier said than done for most of us.

Do firefighters and police own the means of production??

Someone doesn't know the definition of socialism. At best these are social services.

Also police literally have a long history of violently putting down unionization efforts despite having a union themselves.

The Opposite. The opposite of every instinct.

George Costanza wasn't wrong.

I know you’re out there somewhere Nicole

lmao, The Fediverse Chick!

But you can't self-host it??? Blaspheme! /s

Just kidding, nice to know there's something out there.

There's also Duolicious which is similarly free and without ads but there was literally no one within a hundred miles of me and most of the people using it were about half my age so it felt fruitless to pursue.

EDIT: same with Alovoa... nobody within 100 miles...
