"We'll give you ten grand for the opportunity to be deported to an El Salvadoran prison if we don't like you. It's a great deal!"

Huh, thanks for the perspective!

Oh absolutely agreed, I was mostly just responding to the idea that the 2nd amendment would be a safeguard. Last I checked, drones don't seem to be considered a weapon in most cases, and thus are not seemingly covered by the 2nd amendment right to bear arms. Instead, they're a free-for-all, which is both a good thing and a bad thing, of course.

Don't worry, they fully intend to use drones to wipe out any resistance. I always wondered when we'd live in the terror of the skies like they have in the middle east for two decades now.

Kind of hard to use a handgun or shotgun to deal with a Reaper drone that's nailing you from a mile away.

A fair take, and agreed. Thank you kindly for clarifying.

Just gonna leave this here:

https://rufuspollock.com/papers/optimal_copyright_term.pdf

Using existing data on recordings and books we obtain a point estimate of around 15 years for optimal copyright term with a 99% confidence interval extending up to 38 years. This is substantially shorter than any current copyright term and implies that existing terms are too long.

This is a pretty narrow-minded view of Chinese culture. They have positive attributes, too, you know.

They could easily be saying the same for us and "Free Palestine! End Israeli Apartheid! Dismantle the US Armaments Industry that arms and harms the world! Stop exploitation capitalism!" We export good and bad values, too.

What you're suggesting is what Trump wants anyway, for us to become fully isolationist and to never experience any other nations culture. He wants North Korea levels of control and you'd be happy to hand it to him, it sounds like.

No, but that's because they don't understand how exportation of US media has been so important for US cultural dominance and soft power.

Man, USA just shooting itself in the foot over and over.

Part of the reason we (USA) have retained so much soft power while being big dick swinging bullies is the reach of our fucking media ecosystem.

American movies, television, and music have been popular worldwide for decades now. We dominated culturally because the whole world was familiar with our culture via our entertainment. Like, literally dominating with media is one of the cornerstones of a Cultural Victory in the video game Civilization.

While Trump and the Republicans won't give a shit because they hate Hollywood and have a bone to pick with it, they fail to realize that Hollywood helped create US cultural significance, and it exported that cultural significance to the rest of the world, leading the whole world to have intimate knowledge of US ideology and customs.

This is throwing all of that in the trash bin because they literally do not understand how soft power works.

Look, I've been worried about being under surveillance for my political views and personal connections since the Bush era (made friends in college with middle eastern exhange students who went back to their home country and kept in touch). Technically (not really) being part of the queer community because I date transwomen (transwomen are women, duh) further complicates the matter. Not looking to be the first white cisman US citizen to be disappeared to El Salvador, thanks.

If I manage to leave the country I better god damn have a plan to not have to come back and to get some form of political asylum elsewhere.

Pretty sure US still does three hops of surveillance.

If you or any friend you have speaks to anyone at all in a foreign country you are put on a list for surveillance.

I had a Jordanian friend in college and I have a close friend who still keeps in touch with him now that he is back in Jordan. I always assumed that put me on a list based on the three hops method.

Three hops being:

Hop 1: Main surveillance target Hop 2: Social network of main surveillance target Hop 3: Social network of anyone in main surveillance target's social network.

So if you are the main surveillance target, friends of your friends are also targetted.

US surveils people for what are otherwise pretty inocuous reasons.
