If you go the bottle jack route it wouldn't hurt to keep a jack stand as well, so if the bottle fails for some reason the jack stand is a backup.

Having a jack stand is essential anyways for any under-car work, like changing your oil.

I've never seen it and found it entertaining that someone so knowledgeable dress-down someone who messed up something they're passionate about.

Was he a dick about it? Yes. But it doesn't make me like him less, even without knowing he's gotten better about it recently.
