I was a teenager during the 80s. My family lived across the Red River from Barksdale AFB, not a far drive at all. Barksdale is a SAC base, and a known target for Soviet missiles. Our plan at the time was if we had enough notice that the missiles were actually falling, we'd get in the cars and drive as close as possible to Barksdale so we could, hopefully, be vaporized.
