It's literally a way to test the cheater waters. If someone calls you their work wife/hubby, their dtf and probing you. They just know they shouldn't be because you're fucking married.

Problem is, we had that chance. This was the do over. Half the country doubled down.
What's the alternative alternative? Roll over and let Russia invade? Then we're all fucked anyway. Might as well take the chance of standing up instead of dying lying down.
So long as Magats remain in charge, traveling to the US is now like traveling to China. You'll probably see some pretty cool things but also have an above 0% chance for a life traumatizing event.
