Except before they were unapologetic because they could at least feign a moral compass despite knowing they were wrong when they were in the spotlight. Now they aren't apologetic because they think what they're doing is right.

Because it was found by people in society. It was given value within an established society. I'm not saying no one will value it. I'm saying that until there is an established society, it won't hold value. Then if you do end up in a society, you need to sway them to adopt gold as a currency while keeping your gold stores secret.

The thing about the value of gold in a society is that it is only valued within the society. If society collapses, there will be no group or entity that could value it. You'd need to wait until people start rebuilding. But then you'd need to be in a position to shape how currency is decided on and minted. Unless you've kept your load of gold secret, it'll be hard to convince people to adopt gold as a currency without starting on more even ground.

How did the military find out about your autism? I could see this being similar to the "don't ask don't tell" situation in the past with gay people in the military. It might be disqualifying, but they wouldn't know unless you told them. The police might have less stringent requirements, but unlikely some random officer/employee that answers the phone would know definitively. If you're comfortable not disclosing it, you might be able to try.

To them, it's worth a little suffering as long as the "other team" doesn't get a win.

It's not that it's worth suffering. It's that it must be done despite any suffering. There's the lovely saying that a MAGAt will gleefully eat a shit sandwich if they think a liberal will have to smell their breath. They see a win as only possible if liberals are somehow losing. Even if both sides would benefit, even if their side would benefit more from some action, they must not let liberals have a "win". It's a psychotic depth to their zero sum game.

Nah. Hitler was only captured in black and white photography. The other one is colored so it can't be him.
