What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a selfhosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Think of it as an opensource alternative to reddit!

The national soccer team made it to the knockout stages of the Arab Cup for the first time, uniting fans from Gaza to the West Bank to Cairo to Arab cities in Israel.

In Gaza, nearly 50 men, teenagers and boys made their way through a stormy night and muddy, flooded streets to a makeshift cafe in a tent on the outskirts of Khan Younis, where a technician worked frantically to get the game’s livestream playing on a big TV powered by solar panels and batteries, and the cafe’s owner fed cardboard boxes and paper scraps into a fire to make hot drinks and heat the room.

Ismail Nasser al-Din, 20, sat dripping wet, clutching a Palestinian flag. He said he had lost his brother, a cousin and a friend in the war. “I hope our team will win,” he said. “We need any reason to laugh, enjoy and get some relief.”

Looking for a self hosted, web search trends monitor. I have looked at Plausible Analytics, OpenSearch, Matomo, and some other website analytics platforms, but I'm not necessarily wanting to monitor a specific website(s). Rather, I want to monitor what people are searching for on the internet.

Is such a thing possible?

In a time of deep Palestinian anguish, the national football team's successive victories in the Arab Cup, currently taking place in Qatar, have ignited a rare and precious sense of unity.

This joy begins in the rain-soaked tents of displaced families in Gaza, stretches to refugee camps in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria, and ripples across Palestinian communities worldwide.

From Rafah comes Ihab Abu Jazar, the team's coach, whose family home was destroyed and whose mother was moved to a tent in the Mawasi area. He becomes, suddenly, a beacon of hope.

For a fleeting moment, his squad delivers triumph on the green pitch, qualifying for the next round and dedicating the victory first to Gaza and then to Palestinians everywhere.

Behind the Fida'i, the team's nickname meaning fighter, a collective spirit emerges. It transcends sport, reflecting a profound yearning among Palestinians to reclaim an unfragmented identity, free from the suffocating grip of political division and despair.

I'm going to use three examples.

  1. Reddit, High Moderation the absolute worst: I've seen many people including myself get wrongfully banned from that website, It has the strongest moderation possible that feels a bit authoritarian. It tracks your device with an ID and your IP albeit for 100 days. I've seen people getting banned because they were protesting against "ICE" as "Violence" I've known people getting banned on r/suicidewatch because when someone reports you on Reddit sometimes there's a bot saying "Hey, we are here for you" which is again crazy ironic that they don't have a team handling these sort of issues, not that it's their job to do so but due to Reddit's aggression with Bots and Filters it feels like hell.

I posted a NSFW themed meme on an NSFW community and within seconds the post was removed due to Reddit's filters leading with a permanent ban, What are Reddit's filters and what classifies as a "filter" who knows. I sent an appeal saying that my alt got banned wrongly (same email) but I know that they won't bother to check. Leaving someone with no choice other to start clean again which is against their rules as a Ban Evasion however I still believe it was a wrong decision so I'm worthy of another chance.

You can argue after Reddit's controversies with r/the_donald and a subreddit where there were people literally dying on camera, Reddit enforced harsher rules which is understandable, but what they still don't understand is that in case there's a mistake you need to have better ways of communicating with an actual person, the appeal message is 250 Characters long and that's it. There are literal Nazis there who haven't been banned but I did just because of a meme.

  1. Lemmy, The Perfect Middle Ground: This website pretty much is in line with what I believe, that there should be moderation but without any stupid filters, karma requirements and power tripping mods, Is it because it's a much smaller community than reddit? Maybe. Will the rules ever change if Lemmy gets much more popular, Who knows?

  2. 4Chan. The wild west: Almost to zero moderation, which to me is a bad thing because there will be people who will abuse that system and post illegal stuff and be borderline mental, I don't think I need to say more about that website.

To be fair there's still moderation, for example after the GamerGate drama posts on /v/ about specific people or e-celebrities is prohibited.

It’s likely you heard the surreal news that FIFA President Gianni Infantino awarded Donald Trump a “Peace Prize” amid the backdrop of protest outside the Kennedy Center.

It’s less likely that you heard about a far more serious announcement the previous week: that Infantino will be formally accused of aiding and abetting Israeli war crimes against Palestinians.

The ICC filing parties will include a group of Palestinian footballers, Palestinian clubs, land owners, and advocacy groups Irish Sport for Palestine, Scottish Sport for Palestine, and Just Peace Advocates, with support from an expert legal team.

According to a public statement from the filing parties, Infantino, as well as Union of European Football Association President Aleksander Čeferin, are facing accusations that FIFA and UEFA funded settlement clubs—that is, football clubs that operate on land illegally seized from Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

"Only a more federal Europe can cope with these challenges, ensuring the respect of our fundamental values and rights.(..) To this end, we support the creation of a renewed cross-partisan and inter-institutional pro-European coalition encompassing the most committed Member States in the European Council, the pro-European majority in the European and National Parliaments, the European Commission, and regional and local institutions, over and above the particular inertias of each institution, and the pro-European organized civil society. We call on them all to mobilize locally, nationally, and transnationally to support these requests for a more sovereign and democratic Union."

This text is based on the declaration adopted by the relaunched Action Committee for the United States of Europe, 18 October 2025, Jean Monnet House, Houjarray/ Bazoches-sur-Guyonne, France

I kept bouncing between two annoying extremes: “just edit markdown files in a folder” (great) and “use a notes app” (suddenly you’re managing accounts, syncing, databases, exports, and whatever the app feels like today).

So I built MarkdownManager: a small self-hosted tool that lets you browse and edit a folder of .md notes in your browser, with a preview right next to it. The important part: your notes stay as normal files on disk. No database, no vendor-shaped gravity well. If you stop using it, nothing breaks and your files are still just… files.

Repo: https://github.com/Henkster72/MarkdownManager

If you try it and hate something (UI flow, mobile layout, how it handles folders, whatever), I’m genuinely interested in the sharp feedback.

If you were in a situation where it was plausible to convert an average working class fascist to a leftist through establishing common ground, what could you think of?

All I could think of was:

  • We agree the mainstream media lies
  • We agree the status quo is failing
  • We agree we deserve better pay
  • We agree the system does not really care about us

Anyway, did you know evil Russian dictator Joseph 'just a spoonful' Stalin killed 67 × 10⁴²⁰ people with slave labour gulags which makes him just as bad as that Hitler guy? Vote Kamala Harris!
