What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a selfhosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Think of it as an opensource alternative to reddit!

Microsoft's AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, has shared his opinion after recent pushback from users online that are becoming frustrated with Copilot and AI on Windows. In a post on X, Suleyman says he's mind blown by the fact that people are unimpressed with the ability to talk fluently with an AI computer.

His post comes after Windows president Pavan Davuluri was recently met with major backlash from users online for posting about Windows evolving into an agentic OS. His post was so negatively received that he was forced to turn off replies, though Davuluri did later respond to reassure customers that the company was aware of the feedback.

How realistic is this architecture? It's been a while since I've set something like this up for work.

The thought behind this layout is that having only one machine hanging out there with just Apache and ssh (from lan only, non-standard port), and forwarding via Mod_Proxy any services I might want to share with non-LAN friends/family (photos, docs), is a smaller exposure than hosting all my VMs in a DMZ and hoping that the one server doesn't get nuked.

Something like: DNS -> public-zone{ www-serv } <-> firewall-1 <-> lan{ vm-host <-> firewall-2 <-> (printers, laptops, etc) }

firewall-1 is actually a router running Tomato, with custom iptables rules. That way if www-serv is compromised the attacker can't just drop some rules.

firewall-2 is just iptables rules on vm-host

all LAN computers' iptables are a little more permissive, with holes for SAMBA, CUPS, and ssh on non-standard port.

What do you think? Is this sufficient? What would you do differently?

Last thread here

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

PrefaceI'm not trying to call out the mod action of removing my post from the comm so much as I'm calling out the complete lack of mod action leading to the comm becoming shit and having the current top post by scaled, hot, and active being a post that explicitly targets another lemmy user.

That out of the way... !mildlyinfuriating@lemmy.world has clearly been slipping from the purpose of the comm for a while now. Most of the posts are actually infuriating and/or political. I understand that what qualifies as either of those can be different for different people, but I feel most of this shit clearly isn't mundane or simple enough to fall under the label of just mildly infuriating.

Here's some examples from the first page right now, sorted by scaled.

While I could have sworn the sidebar had a no politics rule, it doesn't at the time of me writing this up, so politics are arguably acceptable, although I personally feel these all clearly don't match the theme of the community, violating Rule 7.

Sidebar, and expanded rule 7

A few other posts have been made calling this out.

Mod harder and [META] What actually constitutes "mildly infuriating" content?

################################

Beyond all that mess, we have what was the final straw for me.

Rule 1 (and less so 5), and the current top post by scaled, hot, and active.

I cannot accept that a post to mildly infuriating that targets a specific user while not even removing their username is respectful, and I personally consider it harassment (while it may not violate rule 5 as there is no call to action). Removing the username is usually the bare minimum even in the fucking reddit brigading subs, for plausible deniability.

And regardless of whatever arguments can be had about interpretations of the community's specific rules, it's a dick move. Just block the guy. It reminds me of the god awful reddit dogpiling and brigading. I don't want any of that to come to lemmy.

So I reported it, then saw the recent posts asking mods for action that got no response. I then looked at the mods.

  • LillianVS@lemmy.world (Aer) has not been active in two years.
  • STRIKINGdebate2@lemmy.world (Striker) has not been active in one year.
  • Tenthrow@lemmy.world had not appeared to be active for six days at the time I reported the post, but upon checking the community mod log was likely active two days before (assuming that the other two wouldn't be just lurking and modding for over a year).

So I did something dumb as hell. Roughly an hour after I reported it, I made my own post (now removed from the comm). I find people who make call out posts about others, and the absentee mods allowing it, mildly infuriating. Yeah, childish as shit. What's done is done.

Modlog:

Removed for "doesn't fit community", but what do you folks think? Does it really not fit when the top post is what it is? Personally I think both should be gone, lest that comm descend further into shit.

Either way, now that I have this yell into the void out of me, I'm blocking the comm. Maybe I should have made my post in actually infuriating? (kidding)

A major defence partnership signed by the US and Saudi Arabia is expected to fast-track arms sales to the kingdom, of which the F-35 warplane is just one component, current and former US officials told Middle East Eye on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The conversation has changed from 'we will see' to 'yes, but how and when'," one person familiar with the deal said. The White House announced on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed a new Strategic Defence Agreement (SDA).

The details are being hammered out by officials in the US government. A former senior US official familiar with the ongoing process confirmed to MEE that the agreement will put Saudi Arabia far ahead of other Gulf states and US partners in terms of wait times and negotiations for sophisticated US weapons.

"The Saudis have received Trump's go-ahead to get the best in defence technology," the former official said.

Here is the official release by the Canadian government.

Canada, seeking tighter ties with the European Union, will boost its investment in European Space Agency programs by C$528.5 million (EUR326.1 million), a tenfold increase compared to previous contributions, a top cabinet member said on Tuesday.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who won an April election on the back of a promise to diversify the economy in the face of U.S. tariffs, is pressing for tighter defense and security relations with the EU.

...

The money will be spent over a three to five year period. In a statement, Industry Minister Melanie Joly said the investment would advance research and development of Canadian-made space technologies for both civilian and defense purposes.

These include satellite communications, Earth observation, space exploration, positioning, navigation and timing, and space situational awareness, she said.

She cut a check for $250,000 to New Yorkers For Lower Costs, the main independent group backing Mamdani’s campaign, in August.

GitHub cofounder Tom Preston-Werner, 45, is Mamdani’s other billionaire backer; in April, he sent New Yorkers For Lower Costs a check for $20,000. Preston-Werner, also a Bay Area resident, started the software development platform in 2008 and became a billionaire after Microsoft bought the company for $7.5 billion in 2018; his net worth is about $1 billion today, Forbes estimates. He now runs a venture capital firm called Preston-Werner Ventures.

I've been trying to learn a new language (Vietnamese) and a thing that has been driving me crazy are all these instances of letters being randomly pronounced differently in different words sometimes. If you don't think about it too much, it's easy to go "this language is dumb, why do they do this?" But then I think about English and we have so many examples of this or other linguistic oddities that make no sense but which I've just accepted since I learned them so long ago.

So I wanted to generalize my question: For all the languages where this applies, why are there these cases where letters have inconsistent pronunciations? For cases where it sounds like another letter, why not just use that one? For cases where the letter or combination of letters creates a new sound not already covered by existing letters, why not make a new one? How did this happen? What is the history? Is there linguistic logic to it beyond these being quirks of how the languages historically developed?

Canada and Sweden announced a strategic partnership to deepen cooperation on defense and trade, as the North American nation looks to reduce its dependence on the US for military equipment and as an export market.

The countries made the announcement Tuesday during a rare visit of Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia to Ottawa. The agreement pledges to increase cooperation in five main areas: economic development, security, the Arctic, science and technology, and the environment.

“We are like-minded Arctic nations with shared interests in the North Atlantic and the Arctic region,” the countries said in a joint statement.

The partnership comes as Sweden’s Saab AB is in talks with Quebec-based Bombardier Inc. about building its Gripen fighter jets in Canada.

The companies already work together on GlobalEye early warning surveillance aircraft, which are assembled in Canada before being shipped to Sweden for installation of radar and sensors.
