What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a selfhosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Think of it as an opensource alternative to reddit!

If you are on this platform you will be familiar already with everything in this video, but the reason i'm posting it is because this is a masterclass in how to communicate to "normies" about socialism, communism, China, imperialism, the global south, etc. Textbook example of how it's done.

This is exactly how we should talk about these topics with people who know virtually nothing about them. Clear, simple, concise, using language anyone can understand, and in a very disciplined way staying on message and talking about what really matters, not getting lost in tangents, details, jargon, etc.

Western media has failed to accurately describe events at the heart of an Israeli military scandal, after the country’s top military lawyer was arrested for leaking footage of IDF soldiers allegedly gang-raping a Palestinian prisoner in a detention centre.

The attack was so brutal that the man was hospitalised with a ruptured bowel and intestines, severe anal and lung injuries and broken ribs. He needed multiple surgical operations for his injuries. The soldiers “inserted a sharp object into [his] anus and ripped his rectum apart”, according to Mondoweiss.

However, Western mainstream media outlets including Sky News, the BBC, Channel 4, The Guardian, The Financial Times, Bloomberg, The Times, The Telegraph and The Independent have failed to use the word ‘rape’ in their headlines when reporting on the story. The incident has been largely referred to as ‘abuse’.

Online pornography showing strangulation or suffocation is to be made illegal, as part of government plans to tackle violence against women and girls.

It follows a review which found depictions of choking were "rife" on mainstream porn sites and had helped normalise the act among young people.

Both the possession and publication of such material will be a criminal offence, under amendments to the Crime and Policing Bill currently going through Parliament.

Amazon is introducing an AI tool that will automatically translate books into other languages. This should be useful for authors who self publish.

Brussels Airport on Thursday temporarily halted its operations due to a drone sighting, a spokesperson for air traffic control Skeyes said, without specifying how many drones had been seen.

It was unclear how long operations at Brussels airport would be halted.

On Tuesday, Brussels Airport and Liege Airport closed for several hours after drone sightings.

My personal domain has hundreds of aliases - one for each site I deal with. This is great for identifying the source of spam, and I retire any aliases that get spam.

haveibeenpwned.com lets me add a domain, but wants 3912 USD a year to actually tell me which addresses leaked. This is obviously an insane price for a nice-to-have.

Is there an alternative for free or very cheap? A self-hosted tool that would pull down lists would be great, but I suppose those lists aren't public.

The dye industry, heavy on the use of petrochemicals, is one of the world's biggest polluters. Now dyes can be made by microorganisms that -grow- colors.

Got some gruyere at the store. Never had it. I love cheese. Opened it up and got punched by a strong funk. Was excited for strong flavor. Tried it and it was nothing like the smell. It's mild. Good, but not at all what I expected based on the smell. It's somewhere between parmesan and mozzarella. I like it but the difference between opening package and tasting was weird.

Particulary, I'm intrested in those that are also:

  • Have a weird love-hate dynamic, e.g. parents/siblings/caretakers alternate between love and hate
  • East Asian (Because I feel like those are more relatable, since I'm ethnic Chinese)
  • Face bullying in school
  • Struggle with depression/anxiety/PTSD/CPTSD

I want to use these as a sort of "guide" to navigate life.

Six out of ten of the young people had ADHD either diagnosed or suspected. Three of those diagnosed were unmedicated. Other learning difficulties among the cohort also included auditory processing challenges for example.

Mental health issues were noted for several young people including difficulty regulating emotions, anxiety, suicidality and PTSD. Almost all had substance abuse noted in their assessments.
