What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a selfhosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Think of it as an opensource alternative to reddit!

Six out of ten of the young people had ADHD either diagnosed or suspected. Three of those diagnosed were unmedicated. Other learning difficulties among the cohort also included auditory processing challenges for example.

Mental health issues were noted for several young people including difficulty regulating emotions, anxiety, suicidality and PTSD. Almost all had substance abuse noted in their assessments.

EU-based companies continue to export thousands of tonnes of banned pesticides to Kenya and other countries, even though the food it helps produce is often exported back to the EU, new research has confirmed.

A report published on Thursday (6 November) by Swedwatch, a Swedish NGO, and the Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (Koan) found that over 120,000 tonnes of pesticides that are banned in the EU are sold abroad.

It documents the effects of these pesticides, many of which contain known carcinogens, on Kenyan farm workers and communities, including breathing problems, fatal poisonings and rising cancer rates in agricultural regions.

Typically, when a person connects to an online service like Netflix, the ISP connects to the network hosting the service, and the data flows freely. As traffic increases, the ISP and the host work together to increase capacity, so every user gets the same fast connection.

However, citing customer service complaints and first-hand accounts, the NGOs allege that, instead of increasing traffic capacity for free, Deutsche Telekom will ask the host network to pay them a fee to increase capacity, which is against the industry standard of free data exchanges — but not unheard of.

That Brazil chose Chinese electric vehicles as the official means of transporting Mr. Lula and other world leaders sent a clear signal to many: In its quest to transform its roads and its economy, Latin America’s largest nation would be turning to China.

I feel it's only to impose forced identification of all users on the internet.

I download Mullvad VPN but when it's connected via anywhere but Australia i can't even access lemmy via this account.

I couldn't use Reddit either unless I VPN through somewhere in Australia so I assume a VPN won't work to get around these new laws.

I know we all enjoy being nerds and using commands (H4ckerman). But now that everything is either a gui or web based, is there really any use to terminal commands?

For example, on windows I never used powershell or cmd hardly ever. I realize now I probably could have. But Linux just drives me to use it more, which i like anyway (because let's be honest, it makes us feel superior)

I've been looking at some music players for Android, but so far they've all had bugs. Can you recommend something similar to Musicolet that's available on the Play Store?

All my planets die after they start growing a western civilization and I don't know why. I've tried controlling every factor that I can although without theory, praxis, overthrowing the bourgeousie etc. I even have a shitty UBI that I try to stimulate the poor parts, but I can't find any reliable resources on how to actually interpret what I'm seeing. I want to know how to use this kind of data so that I can raise my planets right.

Where can I learn about this? I mean diagnosing problems, monitoring variables, finding solutions to each situation etc. google obviously sucks and gives nothing of substance

I will say that I recently got a new President, maybe the old one was the problem. But then there's China, who raises beautiful public transit systems and all that using the exact same resources I'm getting shitty results with. I'm literally not doing anything different to China, so maybe it's the water? I really don't know.

Edit: in fact, the lush microchips 🪻 China is currently flexing is a piece of the one my President bought. Same chips, different soil.

Edit 2: also, the democracies always look alright when I dig their cadavers to analyze. No people's party, mass line, classlessness etc in any part of any planet so far.

Microsoft has admitted that it can't protect EU data from U.S. snooping.

In sworn testimony before a French Senate inquiry into the role of public procurement in promoting digital sovereignty, Anton Carniaux, Microsoft France's director of public and legal affairs, was asked whether he could guarantee that French citizen data would never be transmitted to U.S. authorities without explicit French authorization. And, he replied, "No, I cannot guarantee it."

California-based startup Reflect Orbital aims to build a swarm of 4,000 giant mirrors in low Earth orbit to "sell sunlight" to customers at night. Experts warn that the mirrors could mess with telescopes, blind stargazers and impact the environment.

Reflect Orbital, which was founded in 2021, has recently taken the first step in a scheme to sell sunlight at night by bouncing solar rays off giant "reflectors" that can redirect the vital resource almost anywhere on our planet. By doing this, the company aims to extend daylight hours in specific locations, thus allowing paying customers to generate solar power, grow crops and replace urban lighting.

But experts say it is a wildly impractical plan that should never get off the ground. What's more, the resulting light pollution could devastate ground-based astronomy, distract aircraft pilots and even blind stargazers.
