A leak of confidential documents from a network of Russian agents operating on the African continent reveals how Russia managed to place hundreds of articles in 35 different West African French-language media outlets – sometimes without their knowledge. The FRANCE 24 Observers team worked with an international media consortium coordinated by Forbidden Stories to analyse these leaked documents, which show just how susceptible these media outlets are to foreign interference.

After taking a lot longer than I was expecting to, I'm pleased to announce the results of the census we ran earlier this year!

This year, the results are on our website instead of being copied into a post here. I'm hoping that this is better since the website charts are interactive, with additional details if you click/tap on something. They also support dark and light mode. Whenever you hear news about the Iranian conflict, it concentrates a lot more on what's happening in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia or Qatar but for some reason not much updates from Oman about that despite them being a GCC member state. Does that mean Oman is spared from the conflict despite being adjacent to Iran regarding their geography?

Ripple effects of oil and fertiliser shortage felt by farmers in India and Sri Lanka despite governments saying there is enough stock to go round

Experts say South Asian countries such as India and Sri Lanka are particularly vulnerable, due to their heavy reliance on imported fertilisers and imported gas and fuel for farming. India is the world’s second-largest fertiliser consumer after China, using more than 60m tonnes annually, and most of its exports – including both finished products and raw materials – usually come from Gulf countries, shipped through the strait of Hormuz.

In countries such as India, the ripple effects of a gas and fertiliser shortage could be felt for months to come, affecting what crops farmers are able to plant and how much they yield, which could ultimately translate into stockpiles of essential produce such as rice falling short.

The ability for farmers to water, harvest, process, store and transport crops will also be drastically hit by oil and diesel shortages and surging electricity prices, triggering further worries over shortages.
