Yikes. He could have excellently handled this.

He could have said: "Listen, I'm not in cuba, I'm not in venezuela, I'm in new york. This is my place of concern and my job is not to criticize foreign governments but make the situation better in this city. Also, labeling foreign statesmen as dictators does not help the situation one inch."

That would have not given them an inch in either direction, would still have drawn criticism from us but at least be materially understandable given his constituency.

It was clear that he will disappoint. Its still not nice to see.
