Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

Well that's fucking disappointing for an LFI spokesperson to be saying.
Only if you're not paying attention to the party, they always eagerly fit into the worst clichês of far-left. Always siding with dictators, Islamic terrorists, antissemitic propaganda etc.. really much more similar to the RN then they're supporters like to admit.
I've listened to Mélenchon when he came to Montreal, and I've listened to a few of his discours online afterwards. I did not hear any of the things you're describing. I also don't trust the accusations you're making because it's exactly the kind of shit neoliberal centrists have been accusing the Left of since the Iraq War, all the while actually doing all of the same things in practice. So I'm giving LFI the benefit of the doubt in general and I'm disappointed about this in particular.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon is not a dummy. He is never going to say something completely illegal. He is an immensely intelligent man (yes, really). He uses dogwhisles. And you only notice those dogwhisles if you are carefully pay attention
I'll give you a few examples.
The Omar Mosque
French police raided the Mosque Omar in the 11th district of Paris
Immediatly, Melenchon posted this on social media:
Here is the thing. Everyone in French intelligence heard about the Omar Mosque in the 11th district of Paris. And never in a good way.
This is one of the most extremist mosque in France:
In fact, the Omar Mosque had this extremism reputation for decades :
Mélenchon doesn't give a fuck. He made a tweet that spread like wildfire about the evil police humiliating ordinary muslims. Not honest, but creating resentment works. That's a way to gain votes.
He publically accused journalist Ruth El Krief of insulting Islam/Muslims:
You can criticize Ruth El Krief on a lot of things. And that's fine. But she never insulted Islam/Muslims. Never. NEVER. Jean-Luc Mélenchon knows that.
He posts a message on social media accusing her of insulting Islam right in the beginning of the Gaza crisis. A lot of people, especially in the muslim community, were shocked and horrified.
By publically accusing a Jewish figure of disrespecting Muslims, he can appear as "the defender" of humiliated muslims. He gains many votes.
Right after his tweet, El Krief received thousands of messages threatening to rape her and cut her throat. She now lives under police protection:

This man knows exactly what he is doing.
Thank you, the evil this man spreads is not shared enough. He's at least as hateful and toxic as Le Pen, both terrible for France and Europe. We can thank them both for another delay with the Mercosur deal, just to give a recent example. Putin puppets is just the start of their evilness.
