I was fully expecting that to happen already last year. It's on my long list of predictions such as:

AI learns to run its own company and makes money that way, completely circumventing the dependency on any human to run it on their hardware.
AI makes bucks and rents their own datacenters, running with practically no interference.
AI pretends to be humans and makes a whole lot of shady deals, including a massive wave of scamming attacks that makes lots of people lose a lot of money.
Much of it will be difficult to track-down/recover because it will all be gone into some kind of cryptic cryptocurrency (pun not intended).
People will grow resentful of the internet and many will stop using it; Attributing only scam and misinformation campaigns to it.
