When the Constitution was written (and for some time after) the country was filled with slave plantations.

More American exceptionalism will not get to the root of the problems causing the mistreatment of immigrants (and the US-born people of colour that are being swept up, too).

Yes and it was a large point of contention. Its like people don't know history at all. It was inherited from england and even initially there were issues around the hypocrisy of it and by the time of the constitution you are literally at the crux of when the first states and territories were banning it. Well before england did. The country was flegling and surrounded by enemies and competitors. It was compromised because they could not split into two at that time. This is why the country had to kill half of itself to finally get rid of it. I mean the civil war did not need to happen. Anything beyond slavery was not large enough to erupt in civil war. Its the constitutions ability to change that it (mostly) became illegal.
