Argentina get what it deserves. For decades they have been the far right nuts of the Latin world, pardon me, argentinans think they're European

[–] potustheplant@feddit.nl 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Pardon my french, but you kinda sound like a xenophobic dick. We don't deserve the country to fail, no one does. Also, Argentina's been "far right" for decades? What? I don't know what you're smoking but it's making you pretty delusional xD

I've read this "donkey meat" news story several times now on Lemmy and I hate to disappoint you but no, no one is eating "donkey meat" here. I've never seen or heard of anyone eating that in my entire life. Everyone I know is eating meat (cow or pig meat btw haha) throughout the week and an asado on the weekend.

Milei's a dumbass though, and I hope we can get rid of him asap. He's done a lot of harm to the country.

argentinans think they're European

What does this even mean?

[–] PolyLlamaRous@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This is usually the case. There seems to be a nugget of truth in it, but articles always make it seem larger than life. Horse mule and donkey meat consumption is in fact up. Is it significant - no. Is it common, also no. Is it a THING? Na, no it's not a thing. It's simply slightly higher than it was before but still very rare.

It doesn't make sense for it to be a common thing as there simply is not enough donkeys in the country, even if you were to slaughter them all for it is be common. Apparently there is 59k donkeys and 50,920,790 cows in Argentina. There seems to be a 7-16% increase in the slaughter of donkeys for meat although this number seems to be in question. It apparently is a third the cost of cow meat.

[–] potustheplant@feddit.nl 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Please, show me a single real world example where "donkey meat" is being sold or consumed. I'm not speaking about something I researched online. I live in Argentina and have travelled to many different cities there as well.

[–] PolyLlamaRous@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Uhhhh... I have been to Argentina. I was there a long time. Can't say I saw donkey meat. Also doesn't mean it is not there, or eaten. All I can do it tell you what the Argentinien government has to say about it.

Unfortunately as I apparently can't research it online... And I live in Germany... I can't fulfill your request as it would require me to go to Argentina to satisfy some dude on reddit. Sorry dude? Don't know what you want.

[–] potustheplant@feddit.nl 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

"the government" did not talk about donkey meat at all. Maybe you should read the article before posting anything? Also, I didn't live a "long time" in Argentina, I lived there my whole life. And I can confim that this story is absolutely false.

Oh, and we're not on reddit.

[–] PolyLlamaRous@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Chillll.. Its just donkey meat and the internet. The government does in fact talk about it. They publish reports about animal meat production and consumption like every nation. It's part of their annual reports that prove a point that I really don't care about at all. If you want to say they only eat cow in Argentina because you know best and no one can use internet sources to prove you wrong... Fine. Great. I don't know what to say. You won this internet battle! Yay!

[–] potustheplant@feddit.nl 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They don't talk about meat, but not "donkey" meat. Because it's not used for human consumption. You're more than welcome to prove me wrong, but you haven't. I believe that already speaks for itself.

And yeah this type of news bothers me because it promotes an erroneous idea of what Argentina is actually like. I once hosted a German student for a month and, while the guy was pretty chill, he was expecting my city to be full of cows and nature. Once I was watching How I Met Your Mother and when they go to Argentina they should either hippies on a beach living on what appears to be a jungle or an extremely run down hotel in Buenos Aires. Neither were even remotely close to real life.

Quotes and sources within and outside of Argentina news. (if you allow me to use the internet now for proof). It just takes a quick search for pages on info on it. Feel free and try the same.

They are eating donkeys now in Argentina and marketing it as beef is getting expensive

Chubut producer Julio Cittadini’s “Burros Patagones” project began commercial sales of donkey meat in April at 7,500 pesos per kilogram, compared to approximately 18,564 pesos per kilogram for beef — roughly 40% of the bovine price.

With beef prices hitting 25,000 pesos, the legalization of donkey slaughter reveals the rawest side of the Casa Rosada’s fiscal adjustment.

[–] potustheplant@feddit.nl 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ok, finally found the source of all of this ridiculousness. Here you can see where they're supposedly selling this meat. It's a single butcher shop in the whole country and what they're doing is literally illegal. There are no bromatology processes to ensure that this type of meat is safe for human consumption because it's not approved by our national organisms. You literally cannot legally sell donkey meat in the country.

The only reason most news stories are about people in "Argentina" consuming this is engagement. That's it. If the title were "single butcher shop in Argentina sells illegal meat to offer lower prices" then people might not be as interested.

This whole thing is a big ol' nothingburger. That's why most national news outlets aren't even covering it.

A big nothingburger. It's always a big nothingburger. It's the news; they generate sensationalized headlines for clicks. If they can make someone angry, scared, defensive or passionate they get more clicks.

Im an indigenous Latino, wanna talk about xenophobia? Argentinans are masters at it. They look down at EVERYONE

And how is it xenophobic to point out they elect morons and far right trash? Thats just fact. Thats like saying im xenophobic cause I hate trump

Ps. I know a bunch of Argentinans and they insist they are of European bloor, Spaniards and Italians. They are offended if you lump them in with other Latinos. They think Latinos are garabage, they no joke say they’re white

[–] potustheplant@feddit.nl 1 points 1 week ago

"Indigenous latino" is so damn broad that I have literally no idea what you're referring to, exactly.

wanna talk about xenophobia? Argentinans are masters at it

Seems like you either encountered some shitty people (believe me, you can find those in any country) or you're just a rather unpleasant person that mistook being treated as such, for xenophobia. From where I'm standing, both seem entirely plausible.

And how is it xenophobic to point out they elect morons and far right trash? Thats just fact.

Firstly, who from the previous governments in the past decades was democraticatically elected and was "far right"? Second, show me a country that hasn't elected at least a few shitty presidents in the past few decades. I'll wait.

Thats like saying im xenophobic cause I hate trump

You might want to revisit the definition of the word.

Ps. I know a bunch of Argentinans and they insist they are of European bloor, Spaniards and Italians.

Well, my great-grandparents where german and spanish and tons of friends' grandparents are first generation european immigrants. There's a reason why so many people in Argentina have european passports. I couldn't care less about that. Why does that bother you though?

They are offended if you lump them in with other Latinos. They think Latinos are garabage, they no joke say they’re white

Who cares if they're offended? Like I said, shitty people are everywhere. And why does it bother you that some argentinians are white? I've been spoken to as if I were a local in Italy, spain, germany, austria and france. If they're "white" then I guess so am I? That doesn't mean I identify as european. I am and will always be produdly argentinian.

You sound like you have some issues dude. See a therapist, it might help.

I just feel bad for the ones not supporting this nonsense.

To be fair the oligarchy tech companies do mass social media manipulation that is basically unchecked.

They do this at the behest of other countries.

I realize we all want to hold people accountable. there is definitely a level of personal responsibility. But it's worth be aware that mass manipulation is a thing.

It can work fairly effectively.

especially when news and social media is controlled.

Most people are conformist. It's actually kind of how we as a species have dominated the planet.

Everything that makes us great is also a weakness.

We can make snap judgments. Act instead of letting things happen. Like a lion nabbing us.
We use mental shortcuts and heuristics to do this. The same processes that cause stereotypes and biases.

We look to other humans to learn how to do things like hunt, care for children, grow crops. Determine which plants can be eaten. This reliance on learning from others and doing as they do means we accept many social norms without questioning them. And even if a few people do, these individuals are outcast. Conformity is highly enforced in most cultures.

There is also ways of grooming people that are very effective and the methods are well known.
Cults use them. But so do politicians and other leaders like the anti vaccine people and grifters.

For instance. The more you hear something, the more you believe it's true because it becomes "common knowledge". Which is rarely questioned.

The Tech people and grifters manipulating public opinions understands these things about humans. And they use them.

I think that would be Uruguay

I know Argentinans and they get PISSED if you call them Latinos or lump them in with other Latin nations, they look down on the rest of us. They will insist their blood is Spaniard and Italian, therefore white

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Argentines are wildly unstable and switch between left and right like a grandfather clock.

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I guess, hard to tel cause their “left” is as conservative as our right

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

They swing from hard left to hard right and vice versa. Example:

Health care is a human right per the Argentine constitution, yet the current president has made it so that you must purchase travel insurance before entering.

[–] Riverside@reddthat.com -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Argentina fell for western misinformation in western platforms, entirely unsurprising that these things happen when people are exposed to that shit

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Except this has been happening in Argentina for a long long time?

They tend to be more isolated and believe they are above other Latin American people so they have always been more right wing

[–] Riverside@reddthat.com 1 points 1 week ago

Yes, Argentina suffered a CIA sponsored fascist regime that consolidated the wealth, media and power of the country in a select far right elite, and they're still suffering the consequences, this is part of the same problem
