I was finished with a bottle of water and threw it into a trash can. Had there been a recycle bin, I would have placed it there. I was being reprimanded and scolded by someone less than half my age that honestly expected me to carry it until I could find a recycle container.

I think you’re in the wrong here. Two reasons.

First, finding the proper trash bin for a bottle requires zero effort. You’d likely find one on your way anywhere.

Second, people “less than half your age” are right to be more concerned about the environment, since they will have to deal with the absolute clusterfuck previous generations are leaving them with.

You really weren’t there. You have no idea what I was carrying. In fact I was at a bus stop & it wasn’t practical to carry a large plastic water bottle with me. It wouldn’t fit into my pocket. My mindful act of placing it into the trash bin was much better than tossing it with the other litter on the ground. To assume I don’t care about the environment based on an incident, well now, this is rich. You seem great at making assumptions. Is there anything else you would like to share with me about me?

I honestly find this complain ridiculous.

I don’t see the issue in carrying an empty plastic bottle around. It weights nothing, and, when crushed, takes no space. There are countries like Japan where there aren’t many garbage bins on the streets and people carry their garbage around until they find one.

There are a bunch of societal rules that started like this. Thirty years ago, most people would still throw their used batteries into the regular garbage bin, would dispose of used oil anywhere, or would happily have a smoke while watching their children at the park. Nowadays no sane person would do either of those. Things change. Get on with the times.

Good thing carrying that plastic bottle around for the performance of doing my part in being a good earth steward. Meanwhile industrial pollution is killing us all on a massive scale. I’m not against the idea of recycling or using public transit. My point is that some people have taken it upon themselves to become almost militant in their attitudes as ultra do gooders. If I can recycle I’m going to recycle. I am not going to go out of my way to do a performance piece showing how much I care about the earth. I think it’s ridiculous that we have been brainwashed into believing that if we don’t recycle everything every time then we were are horrible humans that don’t care. As far as being mindful, absolutely. Buuuut I am not going lose productivity & practicality because I am trying to locate a recycle bin. Hell, that just means there should be more of them.
