He died in Transformers The Movie. One of the dumbest moves in any franchise history. Toy sales tanked. Viewership tanked. So they walked it back but the damage was done.

EDIT: The amount of childhood trauma inflicted upon gen-x by "children's media" is actually pretty surprising.

The amount of childhood trauma inflicted upon gen-x by “children’s media”

I would love to link the English version of the article, but it doesn't exist. I guess page auto-translation might work, but: back when I was a kid, the quite popular Duck Tales got interrupted due to the death of the prime minister of the time. One minute you were watching uncle Scrooge, the other it was a bunch of people carrying a coffin.

I don't think you truly understood the importance of the sacrifice of what that cartoon was trying to teach you, despite it being right there in the song lyrics:

"Everyday, they're out there making Ducktales"

Every day. These guys are just out in that unforgiving world, busting their asses trying to make these duck tales for you, and no one appreciates it.

Perhaps your prime minister dying was the only way for you to truly grasp the sheer seriousness of the sacrifice being made for you when you watched that show.

For context, though, they were trying to sell new toys and give an in-universe explanation. It wasn't thoughtless, just severely miscalculated.

That was one. He, uh, rather made a habit out of it going forward after that.

Prime example of how to kill a franchise

But they made a great, impactful movie!

Alternative view: this is the best Transformers movie to date. I still have it on Jellyfin and watch it once in a while. Spent my whole childhood watching this tape over and over. I would still recommend it today.

I haven't gone back to watch the TV show, but I remember the TV show being much after the movie. Early Transformers show seasons were very basic and over time the stories got more mature and improved.

How dare you sir! The transformers movie was an incredible masterpiece showing what happens when a bunch of toy execs do massive amounts of cocaine.
