To avoid this, I now hang almost everything on hangers. It’s not a perfect system, but I’m WAY better about doing it than folding, because folding sucks.

This worked for me as well!

The only things that lay flat are sports shorts folded in half and the few sweaters I own. Shirts, other shorts, and pants are all on appropriate hangers. When I get something out I don't mess up the piles!

Same, everything but socks and underwear goes on a hanger.
