i mean, it's not much different than parasocial relationships with podcasters, streamers, and other such things.
those people also just tell their audience what they want to hear and flatter them endlessly.
given the amount of unhappily married boomers and younger i’ve seen, kinda hard not to still see this as a net positive
and i say this as someone happily married for more than a decade but i feel like it’s survivorship bias on my part to ignore the vast amount of people with miserable relationships
people choose to be miserable by staying in those relationships.
they also choose to make those relationships miserable.
I'm single and what I notice is how many folks I meet... who are just like actively choosing to be miserable and convinced a marriage will make them more miserable but still actively want to get married. especially as I don't share that mentality.
and often these people text me after a date and tell me what a wonderful time they had... and I don't text them back.
I feel like there is a similar but opposite bias to survivorship in the reporting of relationships in general: you only hear about the bad ones.
My friends are all freaks and geeks, much like myself, but even in our group those that are in relationships at all have been in them long term and are at least seemingly happy with them. This seems like the usual case in the general population too - bad cases become gossip (or news if the people are famous), but most of the stable cases don't make a big deal about it.

Numbers are indeed very high, but none of them reach 50%. And you're right that general unhappiness while remaining married is hard to measure, but even that "gray divorce" rate (when the kids are not as big a factor) isn't so high, which I think would be an indication.
Also, that's only marriage. Lots of people are in stable LTRs (usually not their first, but that doesn't mean much if they are in one now.)
You think people having some fake superficial connection with a mathematical algorithm is better than people having real connections (whether they are good or bad, both are at least REAL experiences)?
If you think it's a good development, humanity is going extinct. Or at least, the people that get swayed by these models.
... I admit this is a rather bitter thought and I'm not exactly thrilled that it popped into my head, but I suddenly wondered if this will potentially become (if it hasn't already) an intentional way to cull the suckers and gullible saps from the population. When someone lets themselves be seduced by an inanimate object, I could swear there's some kind of pattern emerging where it seems like such persons are rather ... dim. Sometimes they are also already cognitively compromised by ideologies that exploit the human predisposition for magical thinking. They succumb to the saccharine sycophantic siren songs the chatbots feed them about being prophets, seers, or chosen ones, and get talked into walking into traffic or leaping off a building and stuff like that BECAUSE they spent their whole lives up to that point willfully kneeling at the feet of one of the many denominations of the mainstream Abrahamic cults for instance.
I'd call it natural selection except it's difficult to ever possibly be LESS natural than a language model transformer algorithm serving as some poor doomed fool's shoddy mimicry of a lifecoach.
Please understand i am NOT SAYING that anything about this is "good", however!! These are just some DARK AS FUCK CLOUDS from horizon to horizon and I'm desperate to see some kind of silver lining ._.
So far all that's come to me is, "maybe the interesting people will survive. Maybe the smart ones. Maybe the most rational ones. Maybe there won't be as big of a crowd of idiots drowning out the people who actually know what the fuck they're talking about.."
Same here friend, same here. Humanity/nature will survive either way. Evolution will filter the bad stuff out of us either way. That's what it has been doing for hundreds of millions of years.
It is a coping mechanism to not be worried I guess. So I'm not necessarily worried for humanity, it's just that I'm too altruistic to not care about those people. I can guarantee you that there are a huge amount of people that couldn't care less about the people being trapped by AI systems.

AI relationships themselves are abusive. They are the ultimate gas-lighting machines.
