Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with YSK.

All posts must begin with YSK. If you're a Mastodon user, then include YSK after @youshouldknow. This is a community to share tips and tricks that will help you improve your life.

Rule 2- Your post body text must include the reason WHY YSK:

In your post's text body, you must include the reason "Why" YSK: It’s helpful for readability, and informs readers about the importance of the content.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-YSK posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-YSK posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

If you are a member, sympathizer or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- The majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Unless included in our Whitelist for Bots, your bot will not be allowed to participate in this community. To have your bot whitelisted, please contact the moderators for a short review.

Rule 11- Posts must actually be true:

Disinformation, trolling, and being misleading will not be tolerated. Repeated or egregious attempts will earn you a ban. This also applies to filing reports: If you continually file false reports YOU WILL BE BANNED! We can see who reports what, and shenanigans will not be tolerated. We are not here to ban people who said something you don't like.

Rule 12- Linking directly to a video as a source is not acceptable.

Video only posts are responsible for an outsized portion of rules violations. Your post must contain text and meet the requirements of the previous rules.

Rule 13- If you file a report, include what specific rule is being violated and how.

The Admiral posted this to his com: https://lemmy.today/post/57096701

Pinned and locked it, too. Apparently nothing was blocked, you only need to enable "toxic mode" to see the banned content.

[–] anarchiddy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 4 days ago (2 children)

“Who are you to decide…?”, “What gives you the right to…?”

A: Well, somebody’s fucking got to.

That's the job of the fucking instance admins, you dimwitted moron.

What a self-aggrandizing piece of shit. He should have left when he said he was going to a year ago.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 days ago

Never trust anyone who screams about how hard they’re leaving and immediately come back for more. It’s narcissist behavior, just like believing he should get to silently block leftist and trans instances without explanation. And I don’t consider that little footnote in his self centered rant about how right he is to be anything resembling a justification.

[–] nightlily@leminal.space 3 points 4 days ago

Self-aggrandising was exactly the term I was thinking of. Absolute clown energy.

[–] chilicheeselies@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Another one of those "I know better than you it's for your own good" types.

He's right though, no one should use tesseract. Or anything else he has made or will make. Seems too short sighted to see how he has betrayed the trust of his users.

That manifesto of his has supervillain energy.

What a self-important moron. "I must be the arbiter of what is good and proper and what goes too far! someone has to!" yeah they call it curating your own fucking block list you fuckwit, doesn't mean you should be silently "curating" anyone else's. "But think of the poor normies who are lazy!" then they can go back to reddit. Lemmy will grow, and has been growing, just fine without your "help". "If you don't like it, don't use it!" Aha, finally, something I think the entire fediverse (save for his own little fiefdom) will be likely to agree on.

That entire post is indicative of someone too stupid to read the room and too stubborn to leave it.

I also enjoy that he basically says he's working on blocking all the dregs of society who cannot exist anywhere else online, as if to imply bans from platforms like reddit are typically just, and he also conveniently ignores that he likely was banned from Reddit in the first place, unless he left because he didn't like the same shitty culture that leads to banning people with non-fascist viewpoints.

He's obsessed with this idea of bringing "normal" people here and shielding them from anyone with an opinion about anything that fucking matters. Fuck that. I don't want the same people who have no issues with ice or trump in this space, nor do I want their supporters here. Let those assholes stay on reddit. He's acting like he's politically neutral in this way but from what I can tell that's definitely not the case just due to the vast majority of users here being on the left, if nothing else.

He's literally sought to neuter what is actually good about the fediverse. By silencing the people who are not okay with the world as it is...

And you know he gets a smug look on his face every time he adds a "toxic" item to his little blocklist. What a douchebag.

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Not only that but he goes out of his way to imply you'll be dragged into the troll pits if you disable the filter. Considering who's on that block list, his skin must be tissue-thin.

[–] volore@scribe.disroot.org 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Exactly what I meant by "too stubborn to leave it". He clearly cannot have his fee-fees hurt or his positions challenged in any way at any time; and I would gently suggest that such a person should not be participating in social media in general, let alone a contentious corner of it like Lemmy. The fact he persists in trying to beat it into something palatable for the most bland of palates, while thoroughly Sisyphean, is genuinely funny -- it's that he feels the need to sneakily impose this on others, though, that takes it from funny and dumb to infuriating, fractally stupid, and malicious behavior.

To disable them (referred to as enabling Toxic Mode in the settings), it’s as simple as:

Settings -> Advanced -> Click the "I feel like some content is missing. What's up?" text at the bottom -> Enable Toxic Mode

I didn’t want to add that option, but I conceded nonetheless, and it’s been available the whole fucking time. I’ll admit the fine print buried at the bottom of the advanced settings isn’t the most upfront place to put it, but it is there, and there’s nothing stopping you from turning it on.¹

¹ Admins who deploy Tesseract can opt to disable the availability of toxic mode, but it is available by default.

It even flat out says why that exists:

Tesseract attempts to filter out as much baseline toxicity as possible in order to make the default experience welcoming and round off some of the Fediverse’s rougher edges. This is particularly important for attracting and retaining new users and for facilitating long-term growth of the platform. If you absolutely must, you can enable ‘Toxic

When non-toxic becomes toxic. ~~I don't object to the idea~~ These include very vanilla users, left, right, center. What is this person's criteria for "toxic?" but yumpin yimminy the wording...

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 22 points 4 days ago

It's bullshit, I know. The block list even included my tiny 115 subscriber community for independent canadian news. He must have had to dig to find it and then find something wrong with it.

  1. People who (intentionally?) take others out of context just to attack them

Hah. Not with that list they've curated. Not in the slightest.
