What exactly is a jib? And why was it cut?
Well it's not quite a nib, and it's not quite a jiffy, but man!
So to answer your question I don't know

A jib is a type of sail. And I think the cut is talking about the shape. Beyond that I can't explain.
IIRC, the shape of the jib sail indicated the origin of a sailing vessel, so it could show a friendly ship from a distance.
