This filter is the stupidest fucking shit. Hexbear isn't some huge social media site like reddit and it's not a brine pool of reactionaries like 4chan. I trust that most people around here know how to use words responsibly and appropriately (for example, when directly quoting a historical figure). Mods can sort out edge case edgelords. Why is it necessary to outright prohibit this?

[–] FemboyStalin@hexbear.net 38 points 4 days ago

Absolutely not. People come in from the outside all the time and id rather not be called slurs.

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

it also regularly breaks links and censors parts of west asian names

[–] BoarAvoir@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

I would appreciate reports of any incidents of this when they happen so we can improve the filter.

The f-slur was formerly the primary culprit for both of those issues due to matching a common three letter sequence, but since tweaking it to match less aggressively, I haven't noticed any instances of the slur filter breaking URLs or censoring names. That change was made back in mid-May so any examples since that time I will attempt to fix.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 21 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Who cares? It's one word with many synonyms. Whining about the slur filter is ridiculous.

[–] AbbysMuscles@hexbear.net 65 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Because it leads to voluntary tiktokifcation of vocabulary.

A lot of people online these days use silly workaround phrases to get around hidden word filters, from "sewerslide" to "sesbian lex" (a trend that really got off the ground years ago on tik tok). Social media sites suppress or remove content containing these words to keep things advertiser-friendly. One nice thing about non-corpo social media such as the lemmyverse is that we don't need to speak in such strange, convoluted, and infantalizing ways. My brother didn't have a sewerslide, he comitted suicide. I don't have sesbian lex, I fuck dykes.

More to the point, I find it incredibly offputting that we're allowed to discuss unpleasant concepts but not name them. With the appropriate trigger warnings, anyone here can discuss the sexual violence that came with the Nakba (or the recent Israeli riots calling for the ",right to **** Palestinian prisoners). Or we could talk about the historiocity of claims that the Red Army ****ed its way through Germany at the end of WWII.

Everyone knows what I mean with the censored words. We're all intelligent adults discussing history and horrific world events. Why can we discuss a concept but not name it?

Thank you!!!!! It's just a silly layer of self censoring for a site that has no real need to do that! Like obviously if someone is saying a bunch of slurs the mods need to step in but the pre-emptive self censoring is just.... silly

[–] space_comrade@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago

Also if a chud wanders in here and outright says to somebody "you're a fucking removed" I think everyone can have a pretty good guess what slur they just got called based on the context and the general behavior of such people. Whether that word is censored or not that comment still needs to be removed and that person banned.

[–] Renin@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago

Why does it matter? Yes there's a tendency to ban words describing the lack of certain human capacity, because people are exhausted and tired of scanning for crypto-fascism. Yes they are just going to adapt and use new words, what are you gonna do about it?

Focus on stuff that can actually improve the material reality for the people, so that they can spend less time scanning for danger, people will likely stop giving that much of a shit about cryptic symbols and language, once they secure a stable source of sustainable and prosperous life.

[–] diamath@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You can name the concept. Just don't use loaded language and use CW's. I don't understand the problem here. Censoring the r-slur is not like censoring "lesbian sex".

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The specific example here is not a slur, variations of it are not banned either. You can say degeneration or just call someone a degen

[–] diamath@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

the r-slur is a slur, calling something r-sluration doesn't erase the impact of the word on someone. And that's what the point of a filter is, to minimize impact.

edit: Oh I guess we're talking about specific words and not the word filter in general. Well calling someone a degen is pretty sus so I'm not too worried about some discussion having to work around it.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

But the thing that is sus is the thing that's allowed.

[–] diamath@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago

I mean all kinds of words are allowed, or rather not blocked. I still don't understand the problem here

[–] cattish@hexbear.net 21 points 4 days ago (2 children)

For one, I still don't know what term Trotsky used.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

it's not a big deal but things like the sremovedhorpe problem are annoying and it gets in the way of some math topics but c/math isn't exactly hopping and how much do we need to talk about how a point is a removed sphere anyway?

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Paremovedo enthusiasts on hexbear have long suffered. sadness

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 1 points 3 days ago

man i love winning groceries at a slot machine and then taking those groceries next door and selling them to a guy because that means it wasn't really gambling

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Nah I like the filter cause people never cw their shit and is basically a forced mini cw except for false positives

It would definitely be better if it functioned like an inline spoiler rather than wholesale replacing the text with removed.

Or make any comment matching the filter autospoilered with the collapsed text be the category of prohibited text.

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

and it's not a brine pool of reactionaries like 4chan

Hold this position until you see some of the shit longtime users get banned for at times.
