The goal is to move gaming to "the cloud" as a part of their "You'll own nothing and like it" philosophy...
Step one is to make home gaming prohibitively expensive...
I don't even think it's about gamers. Gamers are irrelevant these days. Those chips are for Crypto farms and AI companies. That you're allowed to own one to play games is a privilege.
And, honestly, a 2060 from 7 years ago is perfectly capable. Gaming is absolutely an enjoyable hobby without cutting edge technology.
I can scarcely tell the difference between 2160p and 1440p, and 1440p and 1080p unless I'm actively looking, though I am in my fifth decade so my eyes aren't what they used to be. I've found lower resolution with better settings to generally be better than the converse.
I've been using a 3080 for years and plan to keep using it until it goes to meet my Voodoo 5 in the great recycling bin in the sky. I'm lucky enough to have a second x16 slot so I picked up a 100€ used GPU for LSFG. Instant doubled frame rate, so now I'm good through 2035.
It's like a lot of things. There is a point where quality is no longer distractingly bad for most people, and you can spend more for higher quality and you appreciate it for a little while then forget about it until you go back to the lower quality. But if you spend enough time with the low quality stuff, it bothers you less.

As an individual, you're not. As a market participant, you're (probably) a rounding error. All of us together have negligible market value compared to a handful of overinflated megacorps. Nvidia isn't a company that is driven by the gaming market anymore. We may have raised them up from the dust, but they've long since abandoned us for greener fields. Companies don't have loyalty, consumers do. You can't hurt them. Buy from them, don't buy from them, it doesn't matter, you're not the customer they work for anymore.

They shifted gforce now from full flatrate to x-hour contingent playtime. Playhours anxiety as a service.
Yeah, it's probably not a very profitable service, if at all.
Meanwhile some gamers go retro or table top. I guess that number will go up with the price of modern gaming..
I've been looking for a classic Galaga console game... I could lose hours on that alone. ;-)
While that is true this news doesn't actually have anything to do with gaming. This was Nvidia telling other corporations that they're going to price gouge an extra 15% for server GPUs (ironically making cloud gaming potentially that much more expensive).
I think the wider goal is to get everything in "the cloud" so they can charge a monthly subscription service.
Also so they can sell everyone‘s data. Preferably to governments.
Yeah...I've spent the last year de-clouding my life...Got just about everything running on a Dell in my basement...
I don’t think it’s a primary goal. But I can imagine several gaming companies thinking this is a great side effect. Make everything cloud subscription service.
I love gaming, but I will give up gaming first...go back and play my old favorites... Been a while since I launched Crysis3. ;-)
