Self host your own nitter instance while you can: https://github.com/zedeus/nitter

https://bird.makeup/ should allow you to follow twitter accounts from the fediverse. Obviously interactions don't make it back to twitter, but could be useful nevertheless. See for example @franceskalbs@bird.makeup. Unfortunately twitter is full of trolls, so many instances block bird.makeup to avid spam from seeping through.

It's not an alternative to xcancel as it doesn't allow you to read feeds you don't follow, but it's good if you want to keep up to date with what users post.

You better start believing in alternatives. You're on one.

Bit of a shitty comment mate.

[–] atx_aquarian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Wasn't meant that way. Meant it like, everyone slowly realizes how great the joke is, applause builds...

Acquire:

  1. taste

  2. books

Leave. It sucks since so much info and live news is often stuck there but people need to realize ot is a dying platform, the less traction any of its content gets, the better.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 61 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

That's not an option because I'm not on X in the first place. I used xcancel to access information from government agencies and some brands since you cannot browse X without an account, and I deleted mine after Elon Musk bought it.

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 minutes ago* (last edited 5 minutes ago)

Talk to your local representatives about it.

In my area they seem to send answer alerts that link to Xitter. And you can't see alert unless you have an account.

There's no good reason why they shouldn't post those details on their own site, but they won't until people put pressure on them.

[–] CovertOperative@piefed.zip 7 points 6 hours ago

twitee.co still works as of now.

[–] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 11 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

If anything of consequence happens on Twitter, you'll hear about it elsewhere.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 1 points 9 hours ago

100%

Plenty of Xitter screenshots even here.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 40 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Well, that also means you can’t verify if a post was actually made or not there. I stay the fuck away from twitter except through nitter if I’m checking a “source”. So now that’s gone I guess

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 20 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly, genuinely, and 100% seriously, if it is a twitter screenshot, it is probably better to simply disregard its veracity. Twitter screenshots are 80% dunking on random vermin, 30% bot posts, and 20% faked. (Percentages reflect the vent diagram of fuck that is twitter) I used to verify, until I realized that the people there are simply not worth knowing.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 13 points 12 hours ago

Well, the thing is like say you see someone share something outrageous that makes you ask “wait is this real? Did they really say that?” Being able to check veracity is important in the age of disinformation.

Also since I post a lot of comics I typically try to share the source. Now most artists have moved to other platforms, but their backlog might still be on that shithole. I don’t want to provide a link to that place, so being able to link to a proxy is preferred

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 15 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Is there actual evidence it's dying? For a while it seemed like the momentum was there but now I don't hear much about mastodon or even bluesky from normies.

[–] 1Fuji2Taka3Nasubi@piefed.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

Unfortunately I seem to hear much more mentions of Threads than Mastodon.

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 10 hours ago

Mastodon and Bluesky will probably get another boost with this, then it'll go back to how it's been.

There are far too many bots for human account deletions to really make a dent in Xitter's numbers.

[–] TheMightyCat@ani.social 22 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I hope more people take this chance to leave X for good.

[–] Hubi@feddit.org 27 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

The people using this service are the ones who already left Twitter.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 13 hours ago

Or never had one, and are just checking one thing. Then twitter says you need an account to view. So you use these alternate viewing sites. I did that a few times.

[–] Keilik@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Sadly my state representative pretty much only posts on there and I feel like I can better tailor my complaints and insults towards him when he fucks up by reading his drivel

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 9 hours ago

Could someone create a bridge account that reposts their tweets to mastodon?

[–] xela@lemmy.ml 22 points 12 hours ago (1 children)
[–] starik@lemmy.today 8 points 9 hours ago

Appears to work, but it’s riddled with pop up ads that cover the content and are constantly reloading and jumping around. I hope xcancel comes back.

[–] pycorax@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (2 children)

Libdirect has a list of alternative frontends that it can pick from. I've been using it to redirect xitter links so I found that helps when one goes down.

Edit: I meant to say libredirect

[–] CovertOperative@piefed.zip 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Yeah, but the one on that list is what's been taken down…

[–] starik@lemmy.today 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

What is that? Can you link it? Searching “libdirect” turned up nothing

[–] ccf@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

I believe they're referring to the browser extension, libredirect
