i mean, yeah they were memes and used as memes.
You'd just be chilling on IRC or the alt-binaries somewhere for your daily dose of Warez, random link appears, you click it. BWAM Goatse in your face. And people where laughing.
These early rotten.com-like memes are basically the source for the Rickroll, the not being able to trust links thankfully turned in to a fun song.
