Run Linux from USB and use storage only for... storage: yay or nay (and why)?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I did that in 2011, and I regrtetted ittt sooo bad. The machines wereeee designed for long uptimes, and between broken flash and lost USB it was just a huge pain.
For 2 years I operate some server now with some nvme connected via usb3 and it works pretty well. But even there one USB/nvme bridge died on me. I'd conclude, that this kind of hardware is not made for this kind of job.
