Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

People have a choice. They don't want to choose to change their diets, embrace healthy eating, and learn to cook delicious vegetables. They want to keep eating a bunch of junky convenience foods, because it asks less of them. When they're ready to put the work in, they will lose weight.
Meanwhile people working 10h shifts with 2h commute still having to find time to do laundry and take care of their homes which they barely have money to pay the rent find out the industry removed all nutrients from affordable food they have time and energy to prepare and turned them into basically fat, sugar and chemical preservatives... there was a time in history obesity was higher among the rich, it was linked to eating too much, but now obesity is higher among lower income, and it's linked to the available food being pure shit - not to mention purposely addictive.
Regardless if you agree or think I'm a full of shit, I recommend checking out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqLPYQRs6Sk
I'm not saying any of that isn't true.
But the government can't make you eat correctly. If you want to enjoy eating healthy, it has a cost. That cost includes learning how to cook affordable, delicious, and healthy food. It exists. It can even be made quickly. But you're not going to magically develop that skillset by osmosis. You have to seek out new information and try new things. If you want to keep doing the same thing over and over, nothing is going to change.
Wow, what a tone-deaf, obviously-did-read-the-comment response, thank you for reminding me how selfish and embarrassing people can be
I'm sorry the truth upsets you, but it is the truth.
ignoring the cost question entirely i see
Can confirm. Been technically obese all my life, moaned about it but didn't really do anything about it. I started daily body weight exercise and watching what I eat recently and I've noticed a significant improvement.
If any of you are in the same boat, just start doing something, it's amazing how fast your body gets used to doing it and you can do more and more as time goes on. You feel so much better for it.
Fair point
