I feel like Mass Effect already popularized the actual term, Virtual Intelligence, and I'm annoyed that the millennial writers in charge of these things are too lazy to push for it.

I think the English terms "virtual" and "artificial" both suffer from the implication that the thing being described is "not real", as opposed to "human-made" or "abiological" or "machine" intelligence. It is real intelligence -- not as generalized as human intelligence, but it can detect patterns, make predictions, and use tools to modify its environment, which is arguably what people mean by "intelligence".
