Like the Romans used to drink from lead cups. Something like that.

(it appears that the moderator is removing any replies with which he disagrees. It might be a piefed issue. But all the removed replies are top level and upopular. Stranger coincidences have happened I suppose.)

It's generally known that alcohol is unhealthy.

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What do you mean? Like a beer once a week or a 24 every night?

Could you please have some sense of proportion?

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 32 points 2 days ago (2 children)

No amount of alcohol is healthy

[–] Ghoelian@piefed.social 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean technically true but a little alcohol won't have any noticeable effect on your quality of life.

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 7 points 2 days ago

Unfortunately some of us don't know what a little alcohol is.

Mentally it's improved my life immeasurably. It took my out of my teenage shell, helped me socialise, introduced me to countless new experiences and people.

I'm lucky in that it hasn't been problematic for me. Yes, it's bad for you physically. A lot of things are. But I'd rather have it in my life than without.

That's just my lived experience and I'd in no way refute the science. But I'd push back a little on the somewhat puritanical Alcohol = bad that many here sometines sanctimonious indulge in.

Alcohol didn't help you mentally. The socialising did that, not alcohol.

[–] Yeahigotskills2@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The alcohol enabled the socialising. I feel many of you equate a few relaxing beers with friends with necking a bottle bottle of vodka by yourself just to keep the shotgun from your mouth. I was a nervous, anxious and low-confidence teen. That melted away after a couple of beers and introduced me to a life I wouldn't have had on my own steam.

I hear you, but easing social anxiety with a drink isn't the same thing as improving your mental health, no one's mental health improves from alcohol alone. Alcohol was just a temporary shortcut to lower your inhibitions. The actual value in your life came from the social connections you built, not the drink.

I understand it probably sounds like I'm splitting hairs, but I feel it's an important distinction to make.

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Good for you, I guess. I genuinely hope that it never causes you trouble.

Well I'm 49 and was healthy at my last medical, so here's hoping.

I have friends who have found it incredibly detrimental to their lives, so absolutely not recommended for all by any means.

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

Fair enough. We're the same age and I got to choose between whiskey and my marriage some years ago. I'm truly glad you have not faced similar trials.
