I was buying vodka yesterday and a guy in line behind me looked at what I was buying and he said he hadn't heard of it and asked if it was good. I said yes. I don't like recommending vodkas to people because it absolutely matters how you are drinking it. If he doesn't drink it the way I do, he might think it's not that good but I can't stand there and explain this to him so I just said it was good and on sale.
Do you mix your vodka with Tang?
Isn't vodka supposed to be colorless, odorless, and tasteless by definition? I don't drink it (and don't want recommendations) but is the difference that the less expensive stuff is less pure and gives you more of a hangover?
I don't really know where that idea came from. Even pure ethanol has a taste and odor.
I've worked with a few dumb fucks that though it was impossible to smell on your breath.
A little maybe. I can tell you that I hate the taste of alcohol. I have never in my life drank anything with any kind of alcohol in it, where I couldn't taste that disgusting flavor. I do like being inebriated though, so I've tried a lot.
An uncle of mine, backwoods af, all kinds of stills, dozens of different homebrew alcohols, would turn anything that "failed" into this odorless, flavorless, perfectly clear shine that I could taste only as a faint idea.
It was so potent that even at his parties, with dozens of other backwoods alcoholics, that jar would go on the stage so we could all see who drank how much, and intervene if we thought they had more than the occasional small sip. It was murderously potent, and your body had no idea.
I'm not sure either, but I guess the key term was "distinctive" in the United States federal guidelines, which might be where the misconception came from. Also, according to this article, in 2020 in the United States federal regulation, flavor was dropped:
and then they go on to regarding the new standard:
That's something that hardcore alcoholics believe. You can absolutely smell and taste it. You can smell it on their breath, and coming out of their pores the next day. In fact vodka breath is just about the most distinguishing liquor in that regard. I remember PT tests in the army and you could count them as you ran past them. Other drinkers, it was much harder, maybe they're struggling cause they're sick? But vodka hits you like the brick wall of Aunt Miriam's perfume.
