The thing is the boat was very clearly going down when they got on.
Everyone knew it was a pyramid scheme from the start they just thought there were at the top of the pyramid and now they're worried because it looks like they're a little further down than that so they're trying to minimize their losses.
the boat has cheese, and as long as you get off before it sinks too much you come out ahead.
