It all started when my main Reddit account was banned—simply because I posted a comment criticizing the banning of a subreddit—resulting in the immediate loss of an account I’d held for about 4 years, with 102k karma. I appealed, but I received no response—not even a reason for my ban, nor any notification that I had been banned in the first place. I’ve filed appeals repeatedly over the past few months, but today, I’m finally giving up. Fuck Spez and his pathetic, whore of a family. When I submitted my appeals, there wasn’t even any indication that they had gone through; I was just left in total silence, unable to do a thing. I started using an existing alt account for basic tasks, but today, that account was banned too—all because I recommended the non-profit, open-source "VPN Gate" project to someone who was complaining about the mandatory KYC (age verification) requirements being imposed in my country. The only reason I was still using Reddit was out of habit, and I’ve decided it’s time to change some of my habits. Ultimately, this is the inevitable fate of every centralized corporation—without exception. There’s no guarantee that some complete moron won’t end up in charge of any of them. I wish more people realized this. If four years of my effort are being sold off to AI data companies, and everything can be permanently wiped out overnight without a word of warning, then that is, quite simply, data theft. Once again, fuck you, Spez—you absolute piece of shit. If you had even an ounce of courage or integrity, you wouldn’t have imposed those damn API restrictions in 2023 and ruined Reddit. I truly regret the four years I spent here, but it’s better to cut my losses now. Goodbye, you son of a bitch Spez, and your puppet, Reddit...
Good for you I guess? I actually went back to using reddit a few months ago. Lemmy just isn't big enough for the communities I want to engage with. I have tried to create spaces here, and nobody interacts with them.
As much as reddit sucks, that's still where a lot of people are. The other issue with lemmy is that it's a bunch of leftists all fighting and arguing with eachother about who is the most pure leftist. It's annoying. But, you'll see that all in due time. Best of luck to you with this place. I guess.
It's a small space and you'll see the same people a lot, so be prepared for that.
On average it takes seven tries to leave an abusive relationship.
Comparing this to an abusive relationship is a really stupid comparison.
You will only feel the pain once you get shadow banned by simply using a VPN. You don't have the shadow ban yet I guess that's why you still stay with it.
Haha, I've been banned from reddit loads of times already. I just create new accounts, and move, get a new IP address and I'm all set. Granted that was all a happy accident, not something I planned.
Honestly, I am back on reddit bcz this place is too small, and it's kinda toxic. Everybody spends their time here arguing over who is the right kind of leftist and insulting anybody else who doesn't share their exact opinions.
Plus, I do gamedev and play DnD and this place is dead as a doornail for those types of communities go.
I left reddit entirely for a few years for what it's worth.
Understandable, although I am hoping more people come to lemmy to fill the gaps
No, you're just not very smart and don't understand metaphors.
Ahhh, thanks for clarifying. I wasn't getting it bcz of how dumb I am.

Gee thanks, this has been very productive for both of us! Speaking as someone who lived in a household with domestic abuse, I really appreciate my situation growing up being compared a fascist takeover of our government.
Besides the companies that abuse us, the government abuses us as well. In a lot of ways the current administration mirrors what an abusive relationship is like. One that we as citizens are compelled to endure. But unlike a personal abusive relationship, there is no escape.
If you cannot use the information then please pass it along to someone who can.
I don't need the information, and neither does anybody else. If you want to be helpful, give people resources to contact their elected representatives, and/or start volunteering with your local community, and make a plan to get out if things come to that. Everything else including this, is just noise.
I would disagree, lots of people do need help and we are being abused by the government and corporations. It is important to recognize this.
Reddit is an abusive entity borne out by the fact that they are thieves of the commons, taking our collective knowledge and communities for themselves, and locking them up behind a paywall. I don't care what their abusive terms of service are, what they did is wrong. But this isn't even about them though because everyone is doing this same shit.
I have already been involved in local elections. I have stood on the capital of my state demanding rights for other disfranchised citizens. I have gone to DC to lobby my representatives multiple times. I know the power of community organizing and influencing local elections. I also know how little power we have on a state level and how we basically have zero power at the federal level (non-wealthy people)
We have problems that can't be fixed by flexing our political power alone. This is the real conflict we face and is why so many people have been disenfranchised.
Yeah, well, you know what the next step to the peaceful stuff is after voting, lobbying, and running for office. We all do.
