Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Email is the original federated service. It's the way you explain the fediverse to newbies.
well sorry for providing little description on the email part
what i mean is that i know email is federated but like it isn't easy to host and requires a bunch of stuff that you have to pay or not own for
so because the protocol's that the fediverse uses are mostly modern basically i mean that it is a easy to host email requiring fewer things and fewers money to spend on
What makes e-mail hard to host is not the protocol, which is actualy great (especially for its age) or implementations (they are even better), but the actual specifics of the service: volume, popularity, importance. All these pull various bad actors: spammers, scammers, big corporations wanting monopoly, etc. I don't think fediverse have means to fight that. E-mail services got a of mechanisms to fight most of that, and that makes it difficult to host.
maybe yes but since the implementation can have plugin support it will be likely that it wont be that hard (unless the plugin's have bugs)
especially if that implementation can defederate without bugs and also i expect people making those implementations can add a send limit per minute or something else
The problem isn't a lack of plugins. Email servers have all sorts of "plugins". Any spammer prevention plugin you can think of, and a thousand others that you haven't even imagined have already been implemented for email.
And email servers already defederate all the time. That's why it is hard to get small email servers to reliably send mail. You have to convince others to federate with you.
Do you host any type of Fediverse server? If no, why not?
i do self host things just not fediverse i know to use nextcloud searxng and a bit more
My point being, yes hosting email is a pain in the ass but it can be done. Hosting a Fediverse server is also a good bit of work. So email is the original federated protocol but there’s really no way to “fix” it.
maybe but also like i dont think we should fix email we should start from 0 again IMAP is rotting
The hardest parts of email are the bits that have been pasted on after the fact to deal with issues like encryption, spam, and phishing that were't considered from the outset.
You can get self deploying packages that set virtually everything up aside from some DNS records maybe and dealing with the various spam lists that don't like dynamic home IPs.
Email though is just another addressed messaging service, no matter the protocols behind it, if something has the capacity to send mass unsolicited comms, someone will try and abuse that, and someone else will create mechanisms to prevent it, and then we end up with the same complications that email has in the cat & mouse world of controlling junkmail.
