Rules: (interactive)

1) Be nice and; have funDoxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Please familiarize yourself with them

2) All posts must end with a '?'This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?

4) NSFW is okay, within reasonJust remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com. NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].

5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions. If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.

6) No US Politics.

For me it's always been a way to donate based on reason rather than emotions. I never quite figured out why it has this dark, cultish reputation among the people who for some reason oppose it.

Because of what prominent proponents of "effective altruism" actually donate to.

What I most often hear recommended as the single most effective way to donate is to an organization that buys bed-nets to africa to protect people from malaria. What's the problem with that?

What do you think they donate to?

"Effective Altruism" is the name of a very specific ideology. Many proponents of that ideology support "longtermism" and therefore spend money on things they claim or believe will prevent huge disasters in the future. So, many spend insane amounts on space colonisation / rockets, in the AI bubble etc. Anything really as long as it doesn't really help anyone. The ideology is often the patchwork to rationalise why that is actually to the greater good or something.

You're not WRONG in your thinking or approach. It's just that there are now 2 versions of EA. One that normal people like us practice, and the ultra rich crowd that uses inherently unpredictable and nebulous outcomes in the future to justify anything and everything that they want to.
