Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

what a strange assumption to make.
Well, those were the stated reasons of everyone I asked.
wait, literally? you asked "why do you say 'usian'" and they've responded "je hateux vouz guys"? i've always used terms like that because "american" seems too broad. i use "north/central/south" american" when referring to larger divisions, and us american when talking about the country specifically.
Well, not like "I hate Americans" but moreso like "I dislike the country that is the US, I dislike it's influence and how it uses it's power". I am a francophone, and it's why I use the term, the one time I was in the US the people seemed very nice.
"I dislike the government therefore I will be disrespectful to the people by refusing to use their preferred demonym." Alright bud.
It's in french. You don't have a preferred demonym in french. It's like how the Dutch call themselves Netherlanders, but very few people say that. (Or how in french they're called Hollandais)
Also how is it disrespectful???
No, it's a rarely spoken language here (though Américain is still more common than États-unien). But "American" is the preferred term when speaking English. Like how in English they're "the Dutch" but in Dutch the people are Nederlanders.
How is it not? It's a signal that the speaker is openly hostile, or indifferent at best, to the culture. We don't want to be called that. It's also not any less vague, despite the common justification of "America is the whole continent". For one, there's more than one "United States" (we are right next to the United Mexican States). For another, there's rarely a reason to refer to the entire landmass because the only shared trait between us is that we weren't "discovered" until Europeans came across the Atlantic. In American English we treat North and South America as separate continents. I know they're often referred to as one in Latinate languages, but to us it's about as useful as "Afro-Eurasia".
