It's increasing amounts of garbage with Korean and Indian content, also as bad.

There’s shitloads of non-english spoken content and no way to filter/hide it.

It’s only gettimg worse

I’ve been disappointed so often, browsing Netflix and finding a show that looks good from the description, but then you start it and it’s in German or Swedish or something. Yuck. What a waste of a potentially good show.

Having a filter for shows by language spoken is something streaming sites should have but I don't see a reason the default settings should hide shows that still have subtitles in your native language.

I strongly disagree that shows in languages you don't speak are "a waste of a potentially good show". If you read slowly or dislike reading when watching shows I understand why you have less interest in them but if you can keep up with the subtitles I don't think you should completly disregard them.

Being deaf, I have to use subtitles anyways, so about half of what I watch on Netflix is non-English, and it's been great

I read really fast, but if I want to read I grab a book (which I do often, I read 100-200 books a year). When I want to watch a movie or show I’m looking for a different experience. Subtitles are annoying because they cover part of the picture, they often spoil jokes and they distract from the actual movie. Dubbed is even worse.

You're on a .nl instance and complaining about shows being in German or Swedish!!

[–] BorgDrone@feddit.nl -2 points 2 days ago

Your point?

I’m on a Dutch instance because I’m Dutch. Doesn’t mean I want to see non-english content.

The German and Swedish stuff is good.

Dark. Excellent

Girl with the dragon tattoo. Great.

The subtitles are too distracting. They ruin the experience.

Do you read many books in English? I don't even notice they are on the screen.

However what i do find distracting is when the dubbing into English and the subtitles don't match, or the subtitles are out of time with the speech.

Is 200+ books a year a lot? If so, yes. I notice them because they are covering part of the picture.

My laptop is 4:3 so I don't have that problem. Also there is a VLC trick (menu) -> Settings -> (Show All) -> Video (open fold) -> Filters (open fold) -> Cropadd -> Add 75px to the bottom.

Basically I'm recommending not to throw out half a world of culture just because of subtitles.

How does that help with Netflix on my TV?

There’s still plenty of content to watch left, so no need for any of that anyway.

It doesn't. No problem. You do you, but you are missing out.
