Muddling the terms don't help anyone. We call new thing AI every five years, and it's not helping.

If anything I am clarifying the terms, but you are correct that is does not matter. Even if we call all of it AI, there are still clear benefits to the whole technology.

You clarified the terms by using the same word to name several wildly unconnected pieces of software. Yeah, if we also call sliced bread AI, the whole AI business will start to look like the best thing since... hm, can't think of analogy right now, it will come to me.

I mean all the comments and even OP himself only talk about LLMs when pointing to stuff that is dumb or bad about AI. So clarifying that there are other part to it also seems not that wild, tbh.

I don't see you're getting my point. The term AI doesn't mean anything anymore. Marketing people clumped everything that uses theory-free inference under one umbrella, of course some of that stuff will be useful. But when people talk about AI right now, they talk about LLM chatbots, even though 3 years ago they were talking about image recognition, and 3 years before that it was protein folding, and 3 years prior it were NPCs in videogames. They do it so when we point out how bad LLM-powered chatbots are, everyone was like "um actually it's not that bad because alphafold will cure cancer any day now".
It's like if a corporation gives the same name to the barrels of raw sewage they sell, but also cans of soup for some reason, and they put their raw sewage everywhere against our will, and everytime someone complains how much they hate barrels of raw sewage everywhere, you can say "but actually, I had raw sewage yesterday, and it was pretty good, I especially like the tomato one".

Or alternatively: you're watching people get sprayed by police water cannons and you're asking the people around you not to condemn them because fire engines also exist.

All of thos technologies you have mentioned is AI though? And it is not really marketing people rather than the umbrella term for all those techs. But yes we do agree in that the term is being used defensively.

Also saying no one want LLMs is a bit subjective, a year ago I would have agreed with you, it is shit and it is everywhere. But currently it is for example way easier for me to do searches and research on subjects I do not fully grasp yet. So I can only imagine how much better it has gotten from less tech savy people, and people with disabilities.
