Note: I'm not asking for legal advice. Rather, it's a thing in some countries (like Japan or Indonesia) as I recall watching a video depicting an Australian tourist in Indonesia witnessesing people pursuing the phone snatcher by ganging up on him in which they eventually caught the dude & undercover cops managed to arrest him. Now, the question remains: are people in the US allowed to conduct a citizens arrest in the US?

I imagine this is uncommon because they'd end up being shot in the US.

And if the police didn't shoot them then the criminal they are trying to pursue will. It's probably not worth the risk.

There was some kind of massive protests involving trucks that sort of wrecked havoc for months in a major metroplex in either the US or Canada.

Like a week after they citizen arrested someone the police shut it down.

Governments take the monopoly of violence very seriously in authoritarian countries.

Exactly this. One guy got shot by women in the United States for honking when the traffic light changes to green, an only slightly remarkable story here. I'm afraid to honk my horn inside my car in this country, you think I'm going to run down a purse snatcher on foot?

It's uncommon because if you get the law wrong you are committing a crime. Very few of us are lawyers.
